Scottish Triumph in Brilliant Inter-League Duel at Parkhead .sx BASTIN PROVES HERO OF ENGLISH SIDE .sx ARSENAL WINGER PUZZLES HIS RIVAL .sx Scottish League 4 , Football League 3 .sx THE Scottish League team beat the Football League representatives of Parkhead , Glasgow , by not playing the traditional type of game , but nevertheless they won , and won well .sx The English team , for some curious reason , supplied more movements reminiscent of famous Scots sides than their opponents .sx Especially was this the case in the last twenty minutes , when they were struggling to equalise .sx McGrory , at centre for the Scots , was mainly responsible for the revolution in his side's play .sx Bastin , in the English side , attempted to do what McGrory achieved for Scotland , but being a winger he was only partially successful .sx Scotland's opening play was partly true to tradition - all five forwards forming a great attacking machine - but the intervention of an English defender , who had anticipated the next move , spoiled everything for the Scots .sx Their machine went out of gear promptly when seven minutes after the start Smith opened the scoring for England with a great drive , following a pass from Crooks .sx Scotland discarded their opening tactics .sx A goal was wanted now .sx Where was McGrory ?sx The ball was despatched on him by every Scot who could possibly send it to him , and in ten minutes McGrory obliged with the equaliser .sx Bastin was the only forward in the English side who really perplexed the Scots in the first half .sx He reduced the leeway a second before the interval after McGonagle ( from a penalty ) and McPhail had scored for the Scots .sx Bastin scored England's third goal , and equaliser , five minutes after the restart .sx In the process of securing this goal he ran into the centre-forward position to receive a pass from Dean , who had worked out to the wing .sx McGrory's winning effort was the out-come of a combined run with Thomson .sx England , man for man , were no whit inferior to the Scots .sx Their defence was strong and good in recovery , and when they failed it was generally due to a Scot exploiting an unexpected trick .sx The wing half-backs , W. Edwards and J. Edwards , might have shown more resourcefulness , but they did not blemish their reputations as hard workers .sx Dean's experience on Glasgow grounds has been unlucky .sx The ball never ran well for him , and ill-luck dogged most of his efforts .sx Actually , however , he was seldom in the picture .sx Bastin and Smith were outstanding in attack .sx The Scottish defence tired in the last fifteen minutes , and the Englishmen showed great artistry , but all their passing and repassing brought no reward .sx Baston and McGrory were the heroes of a game which , despite incessant rain and a smoky atmosphere , was most thrilling .sx GALLACHER HAPPY AT INSIDE RIGHT .sx CLEVER PLAY WITH ALEC JACKSON .sx By BROADCASTER .sx Chelsea 2 , Derby County 1 .sx CHELSEA have won another match - official .sx Great excitement at the " Bridge " when the winning goal came , almost like Armistice Day .sx As the players left the field , Gallacher was patted on the back by admiring spectators and described as " 'good' old Hughie .sx " And yet in the beginning it looked a near thing .sx My own opinion at half-time - when the score was one - one - was that the odds were slightly in Derby County's favour .sx Chelsea were always the cleverer ; but the County forwards in the first half seemed to get more quickly into scoring position .sx But in the second half Chelsea were unquestionably the stronger side .sx Gallacher as an inside right was good .sx In the first minute he was putting nice passes down the middle to Mills and out to Jackson on the wing .sx He and Jackson combined well .sx At times they changed positions as they ran down the wing .sx Near goal Jackson would push the ball along the floor for Gallacher to shoot .sx Gallacher got the first Chelsea goal and Jackson the second .sx When Gallacher scored there was a cluster of players outside the Derby penalty area .sx Hughie drew clear from the bunch with the ball at his toe .sx When some spectators saw him between the backs they began to cheer before he had shot .sx They guessed right .sx After driving the ball past Wilkes , Hughie waved his hand to everybody as he circled back to receive congratulations .sx Bowers equalised four minutes later with a downward header .sx That is one of Bowers' specialities .sx I have seen him do it before .sx And I know that some goalkeepers wish that he wouldn't .sx They have to calculate not only the angle at which the ball will come from the centre forward's head , but also the bounce after the ball leaves the ground .sx It complicates matters .sx Mills had a lot of tries at goal , but no luck .sx Nice to see Law in the Chelsea team again .sx The sandy-haired Scot is a real stalwart and a finished artist .sx WHO IS THE SHOT ?sx What I should like to know about the Chelsea left wing is :sx Which of them is supposed to get the goals ?sx The best move on the Derby side was a forward pass from Randall , on the wing , to Alderman , his inside partner .sx Alderman is the fastest man on the Derby books , and when he ran through to pick up those forward passes he left the Chelsea half-back well behind him .sx But Alderman's finishing was not too good .sx The Derby marksmanship generally was indifferent .sx Cooper , the County right back , played a very strong game , watching the other wing as well as his own .sx Once Gallacher brought him down .sx Cooper made some remark as he got up .sx Hughie advanced quickly towards him as if saying " I beg your pardon " - or words to that effect .sx The referee poured oil on the troubled waters .sx But it was really a nice , orderly game .sx I cannot see very much wrong with Keen , the County left half .sx He can trick an opponent neatly , pass accurately , and he tackles well .sx He had quite a good game , although up against Chelsea's strongest wing .sx SUPERLATIVE FORM OF NEWCASTLE .sx ARSENAL MAKE A GREAT RALLY .sx By THE CAPTAIN .sx Newcastle United 3 , Arsenal 2 .sx THE victory of Newcastle United over Arsenal at St. James' Park by 3-2 was a fine example of their dauntless spirit , and a tribute to their recuperative qualities after the humiliating defeat they suffered from Everton the preceding week .sx Their performance , moreover , was stamped with superlative merit throughout the first half , in which the forwards , half-backs , and full-backs , all excelled either in solo or collective movements .sx Newcastle's display , for forty-five minutes , had not been surpassed in any earlier engagement this season .sx Their masterly prowess aroused great enthusiasm among the spectators .sx Not withstanding the slippery turf and greasy ball , Allen and his wings operated the ball with remarkable pace and artistry .sx Their well-conceived tactics in attack were admirably flanked by Boyd and Lang , who both touched the peak of their form .sx Their great pace and versatility repeatedly bewildered the opposing backs .sx Newcastle's superior constructive play was often based on the conception and enterprise of McKenzie , Davidson , and weaver , whose resourceful efforts in the half-back line largely contributed to the success of the Tynesiders' attack , as well as to the solidity of their defence .sx Nelson and Fairhurst repeatedly elicited warm recognition for the signal success they achieved in countering the advances of their formidable adversaries .sx Newcastle decisively outplayed their rivals in the first half , and were well entitled to their lead of three goals , cleverly scored by Boyd , Allen , and McMenemy within the first twenty minutes .sx TEMPORARY ECLIPSE .sx The Arsenal's eclipse was obviously only of a temporary character , for after the interval they showed a remarkable recovery of form .sx Their attack was immeasurably strengthened by the moving of Jack to inside left and James to outside right .sx There was also a striking improvement in the tackling and kicking of Hapgood and Parker , and the half-backs were more consistent in intercepting the home forwards , though later handicapped themselves in not pursuing the fast , open manoeuvres which characterised their earlier successful efforts .sx Lambert and Jack scored two excellent goals , and these two progressive forwards together with James , made commendable attempts to save the game .sx The Londoners rallied their forces so effectively that the Tynesiders were admittedly lucky to retain their lead of an odd goal , for they were perceptibly outstayed .sx James did get the ball into the net again near the close , but as one of his colleagues was offside it was not allowed to count .sx PROFILIC SPELL .sx PALACE GET FOUR GOALS IN LAST HALF-HOUR .sx Crystal Palace 4 , Northampton Town 0 .sx THE Crystal Palace team gave such a fine display against Northampton Town in scoring four times without reply at Selhurst Park that they are not by any means out of the running for promotion .sx Northampton have lost some of their power , but they can still extend the best teams , and for an hour they kept the Palace well employed .sx True , early in the second half the visitors were fortunate in not having a penalty awarded against them when Lane , only a couple of yards from the goal line , was brought down heavily ; but previously their backs and halves , showing pace and certainty , had controlled the game .sx The absence of Bowen from centre forward proved too big a handicap for the visitors , and , the Palace , employing a wearing-down process , came into their own in the last half-hour , when they obtained all their goals .sx After a rather lean period Simpson beat Hammond three times and credited himself with his hundredth goal in League football .sx Simpson would be the first to admit that he owed much to the fine work of Harry , Butler , and Clarke , who generally did the spade work .sx Harry got the last goal from a very difficult angle .sx THAMES SWAMPED .sx NORWICH PILE UP SEVEN GOALS WITHOUT REPLY .sx Norwich City 7 , Thames 0 .sx AFTER avoiding defeat for six weeks Thames were swamped at Norwich , the City winning by seven clear goals .sx Burditt , who took over the City leadership in place of Brain , was a great success , for besides scoring two goals he displayed clever footwork , and made many smart solo runs .sx Pearson also made a fine first appearance on the right wing , but the City must be tried against a better defence before it can be definitely said that the new line meets requirements .sx Dimmock , the Thames left winger , was a starved onlooker for long periods , but he made good use of his few opportunities , his centres being a source of considerable worry to Hannah who had frequently to cover slips by Smith .sx Frankly , Thames were never seven goals the inferiors of the " Canaries , " but they were , nevertheless , a very moderate side both in defence and attack .sx Several changes were made in their side owing to injuries , and the best work was done by McCarthy and Mann on the right .sx Murphy , Burditt ( 2 ) , Bell , Pearson ( 2 ) , and Lochhead were the City scorers .sx Lochhead , who was limping on the left-wing , forgetting his injury and running in to score when he saw the opportunity .sx FORCEFUL BEES .sx FINE RECOVERY FROM AN EARLY SET-BACK .sx Swindon Town 1 , Brentford 3 .sx SWINDON TOWN lost their home game with Brentford , the visitors recovering and winning by 3-1 , after the Railwaymen had secured an early lead through the medium of a successful penalty kick by Dransfield .sx Lane beat Cope to equalise the scores within ten minutes of the start , but Swindon were the more convincing side in the first half an hour .sx Then the Bees got busy and Foster gave them the lead from a smart centre by Berry , the ball going into the far corner of the net .sx Morris was severely shaken up after the interval and moved to outside left .sx Brentford played a forceful game and almost monopolised the exchanges , but Swindon's defenders rose splendidly to the occasion , and the only other goal came from Foster , who netted five minutes from the end .sx Teddy Nash , a former Swindon Town goalkeeper , shone against his old club , some of his saves , especially early in the match , being cleverly accomplished .sx BETTER ORIENT .sx Clapton Orient 2 , Exeter City 2 .sx AN exciting game with plenty of good football was seen at Lea Bridge , where a draw of two goals each justly rewarded Clapton Orient and Exeter City .sx
