FAST GALLOPS AT NEWMARKET .sx SIR ANDREW & SALAAM SHOW UP WELL .sx By Our RESIDENT CORRESPONDENT .sx NEWMARKET , Sunday .sx Considering the great amount of rain that has fallen recently , the going here is quite fair , and some good work was done yesterday morning .sx Boyd-Rochfort's St. Andrew could not have gone better than he did in a good-pace mile spin with Flange , and he is just the type that may cause a surprise in the St. Leger .sx Racedale is doing well now , and strode out freely in a good pace mile and a quarter gallop with Practor .sx Argonaute II .sx also gave a fine display in a mile and three-quarters gallop with Cornbelt , Pahokee , Royal Pilgrim , and Quarter Sessions , and he may prove to be a likely Cesarewitch candidate .sx B. Jarvis sent Goyescas ( Banham ) , with Collingham , Tippets , and Sphinx II .sx , a rousing mile and a-half gallop .sx Goyescas showed to advantage , and is well fancied for Wednesday's big race .sx Xandover , with Fearsome and Craig Bhan , covered 5 furlongs briskly .sx J. Jarvin's Sandwich moved in nice style in a fast mile and a-quarter spin with Bouyant Bachelor , and he looks in perfect trim for the St. Leger .sx Lambton gave Caerleon and Salmon Leap a rousing mile and three-quarters' gallop , and both strode out with any amount of dash .sx Salaam ran away from Scorch Mist and Zano Grey in a good 7 furlongs gallop , and it is evident that she has made exceptional progress since she ran at Stockton .sx One of the most impressive gallops that caught my eyes was that of Darling's Brumeux with Orletta , Nitakrit , and Tullycross , over 2 miles .sx It was a top-speed spin , and Brumeux was always going best .sx Boxing .sx WHY BALDOCK MAY BEAT CORBETT .sx TO-NIGHT'S FIGHT AT THE CLAPTON STADIUM .sx By OUR BOXING CORRESPONDENT .sx A fight which East London has awaited impatiently for some years takes place to-night , when Teddy Baldock , of Poplar , meets Dick Corbett , of Bethnal-green , at the Clapton Stadium .sx It is an out-of-doors show , and if the night is fine the intense rivalry between these boxers , a rivalry which permeates the whole sporting fraternities of the two districts , should attract a very large crowd .sx The fight , it is to be regretted , is at 9st .sx This means that no title is at stage , for Baldock has retired from the bantam-weight class , of which he was champion , and is now a full feather-weight , whereas Corbett's ambition is to become the new bantam champion .sx Baldock is seeking to challenge Johnny Cuthbert for the feather-weight title he holds , and a defeat to-night by a bantam-weight would point definitely to a decline .sx His sprightly young opponent , on the other hand , may gain glory , yet can lose nothing in status .sx I feel that Baldock will win , and win by a knock-out .sx He is still only in the middle twenties and should be able to recapture-despite his long absences from the ring-the speed , sense of timing , and the lightning right-hand punch with which , only a few years ago , he led the revival in British boxing .sx ABILITY TO HURT NEEDED .sx To upset Baldock an opponent must be able both to box and to hurt .sx Give him that feeling of security that his opponent cannot damage him , and Baldock becomes a tiger .sx That , I fancy , will be the position to-night .sx Corbett is a dainty little boxer , with an excellent left hand for the scoring of points and a good , though somewhat mechanical , defence .sx There is rarely any sting in his blows .sx He would have been a champion ten years ago , when championship bouts were scheduled for twenty rounds , and when boxers were trained and coached to box for points .sx There may be no more than 4lb in favour of Baldock , but that is a big handicap for a bantam-weight , and I visualise Baldock carrying the fight all the way , and eventually succeeding in ending it by sheer weight of punch .sx Edwin John , the son of Mr. Augustus John , is to box again at the Croydon Stadium this evening , his opponent being a Greenwich middle-weight , Jack Delaney .sx Golf .sx SCOTLAND WIN TRIPLE CROWN .sx IRELAND DEFEATED BY ONE POINT .sx Scottish golf has touched the highest peak so far as the season's International matches are concerned .sx Following their victories against England and Wales at Hoylake last month , Scotland beat Ireland on the Newcastle Club's course , co. Down , on Saturday , by 8 points to 7 , and so gained the triple crown .sx The match was a prelude to the Irish Open Amateur Championship which begins on the same course this week .sx Scotland started well by gaining the lead in the foursomes by 3 games to 2 .sx The singles , played in the afternoon , were divided , each side winning four of the matches while two were halved .sx GOLF ITEMS .sx Playing over their own course Crowborough Beacon beat Royal Ashdown Forest by 8 points to 3 , winning the foursomes by 2 games to 1 , with 1 halved , and the singles by 6 to 2 .sx As a prelude to the Welsh close amateur gold championship , which begins at Aberdovey to-day , a stroke competition for the Liangattock Bowl was played .sx It was won by H. R. Howell ( Glamorgan ) , the holder of the championship , with 70 .sx Suffolk County Golf Union held a meeting over the Newmarket club's course on Saturday , when jockeys and trainers were amongst those who took out cards .sx The handicap was won by N. Leach , a member of the local club , with a score of 81 less 0-72 .sx Miss Diana Fishwick ( North Foreland ) , the British woman champion of 1930 , won the Naze Salver at the Naze club's women's open meeting .sx Miss Fishwick played splendid golf for a score of 75 .sx Miss Garnham ( Naze ) won the Silver Division handicap with 70 less 1-78 , after a tie with Miss Diana Plumpton ( Frinton) .sx The best handicap return of the day was made by Miss Alexander ( Naze ) , 94 less 24-70 .sx At the men's autumn meeting of the Sheringham club the Stopford Gold medal for the best scratch score was won by F. T. Delavoye with 76 .sx Delavoye also won the senior monthly medal with a return of 76 less 5-73 .sx The club handicap prize and junior medal went to R. M. Parker ( 15) .sx In the final of the women's match-play tournament for the Silver Candelabra Miss V. Kerr ( 4 ) beat Miss G. S. Whinney ( 11 ) by 3 and 2 .sx F. OUIMET WINS U.S. TITLE .sx SURPRISING REVIVAL IN FORM .sx SENSATIONAL MATCH RECALLED .sx By GEORGE GREENWOOD .sx FRANCIS OUIMET , of Boston , won the United States Amateur Golf Championship at the Beverly Club , Chicago , on Saturday , defeating John Westland , a local player , by 6 and 5 in the final over 36 holes .sx Ouimet , who is in his 39th year , and a very popular figure both in Britain and America , now joins the select band of six golfers who have won the Open and Amateur national titles of their respective countries .sx The others are John Ball , Harold Hilton , " Chick " Evans , Bobby Jones , and Jerome Travers .sx The somewhat surprising victory of Ouimet , no longer regarded as an outstanding figure in international golf , sees the final break-up of Bobby Jones's kingdom - four world championships .sx The other three have gone to T. D. Armour ( British Open ) , Eric Martin Smith ( British Amateur ) , and W. Burke ( U.S. Open) .sx Ouimet , a French-Canadian , is not only a romantic personality , but his name is associated with one of the most sensational encounters in the whole history of golf .sx In the year 1913 , at the age of 20 , when an assistant in an athletic goods store in Boston , he electrified the world by tieing with Vardon and Ray , two Englishmen then at the zenith of their power , for the United States Championship .sx This was a remarkable achievement for a youth who had learned his golf in the fields and pastures of Brookline , but the events that followed were even more amazing .sx HIS EARLY TRIUMPH .sx To tie with the two famous British players Ouimet accomplished the last four holes at Brookline in pouring rain in 4 , 3 , 3 , 4 , ramming down a putt of 8 yards at the seventeenth for a " birdie , " and one of 5 feet at the last hole for the par figure .sx On the following day , all three played together , and though international feeling rose to fever pitch , it was thought that the boy Ouimet had not the ghost of a chance against the two renowned Englishmen , whose better ball he was really playing .sx At the turn the three were level , but at the short tenth , where his rivals each took three putts , Ouimet picked up a stroke , and was never deprived of the lead .sx Ray was the first to break under the terrific strain ; he took a 6 at the fifteenth , and was out of the hunt .sx The struggle was now between the young American and Vardon , who was one stroke behind with two holes to play .sx Realising that heroic measures were needed , Vardon attempted to cut off a big slice of the corner at the dog-legged seventeenth , and was bunkered for his pains .sx As for Ouimet , the longest way round proved the shortest way home .sx He drove away to the right , played a glorious iron shot to the green , and , just as he had done on the previous day , holed the putt for a 3 .sx At the eighteenth Vardon , making a last desperate throw , collapsed , and took 6 ; while Ray , a negligible quantity , holed a fruitless putt for a 3 .sx Ouimet played for his 4 , obtained it , and was champion with a score of 72 to Vardon's 77 and Ray's 78 .sx All America rang with Ouimet's victory , for the miracle had happened .sx The following year , Ouimet crowned his triumph by winning the U.S. amateur championship , as well as the French title .sx OUIMET'S FUTURE .sx When America joined the Allies in the war , Ouimet at once enlisted , and was in the first draft to reach France .sx A great golfer and a fine sportsman , Ouimet has always received a warm welcome on his visits to England .sx He has played in all the Walker Cup matches , and curiously enough , he was the only member of the U.S. team to suffer defeat in the last contest at Sandwich , a year ago .sx Ouimet , who was beaten 7 and 6 by T. A. Torrance , was thought to have played in his last international match .sx He has made an astonishing revival , and as American champion he will not only lead , but will most probably captain the team against Britain in next year's match , to be played in the States .sx Ouimet's only success in this country was in the Royal St. George's Gold Vase in 1923 , when he beat Dr. Willing by a stroke after a tie .sx The same year Ouimet was beaten by Roger Wethered , the ultimate winner , in the semi-final of the British championship at Deal .sx In the matter of golfing style Ouimet is an individualist , employing the interlocking grip - little finger of the right hand entwined with the first finger of the left , as in the case of Charles Whitcombe - and putting in pendulum fashion with the hands held high and the elbows stuck out parallel to the line of the putt .sx In the final against Westland , who won the French title three years ago , Ouimet's putting was so deadly that the championship was virtually decided at the end of the first eighteen holes , at which stage Ouimet was 5 up .sx One of the most surprising features of the championship was the failure even to qualify of the two British players , Cyril Tolley and T. P. Perkins , the latter one of the favourites of the event .sx GOLDEN HAIR COLT SHOULD WIN TO-DAY .sx EASY TASK IN CHAMPAGNE STAKES :sx KING STORK FANCIED .sx MR. J. B. JOEL TO SELL HIS HORSES .sx By Hotspur .sx DONCASTER , Monday .sx Before leaving London I was told that neither Cockpen nor Golden Hair colt would run for the Champagne Stakes to-morrow .sx The news was positively alarming if true , since it meant the collapse of a race which would have been not only one of the brightest incidents of the meeting , but of the whole season .sx On arrival here I found that the story was only half true .sx We shall not see Cockpen , because , I understand , he has started coughing .sx The Manton crack , however , is under orders to run , and it will be something to see him out again .sx
