JEWEL RAID IN A CROWDED STREET .sx Thieves Crash in Car Stolen from Peer's Daughter , but Escape on Foot .sx JACK THROUGH WINDOW .sx BY A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT .sx High Holborn was thronged with people and packed with traffic last night when a man threw a motor jack through the window of Barnett's , Ltd. , jewellers , grabbed a tray of diamond rings and brooches and dashed off .sx The bravado of the man took everybody by surprise , and he was able to turn the corner into Southampton Buildings a narrow , one-way thoroughfare leading into Chancery-lane before any of the innumerable witnesses could act .sx Then a lamplighter , who was only a yard or two from the man when he hurled the jack through the window , took up the chase , blowing a whistle as he ran .sx Scores of other people joined in the chase , but before they could come up with the man he jumped into a motor-car and escaped into Chancery-lane .sx Evidently he hoped to elude pursuers by doubling his tracks , for the car turned sharp from Chancery-lane into Cursitor-street .sx There it collided head-on with a car approach- .sx ing Chancery-lane , the astonished driver of which saw two men jump from the vehicle and race wildly past him towards Fetter-lane .sx In the glimpse he caught of them they seemed to be two well-dressed young men , both wearing soft felt hats .sx They carried nothing in their hands , and as only a wooden mallet-was found on the seat of the abandoned car the assumption is that one of the men had pocketed the jewels on the short flight from Holborn .sx STOLEN CAR USED .sx The car used by the raiders belonged to the Hon .sx Sylvia Fletcher Moulton , daughter of the late Lord Moulton , and was stolen from Oldsquare , Lincoln's Inn .sx Miss Moulton , who is a barrister , has chambers in Lincoln's Inn , where she parks her car regularly while in her chambers .sx It had been taken from the square during the afternoon and driven to Southampton-buildings in readiness for the raid .sx It was at the head of a line of cars , and with a man sitting at the wheel the running of the engine would not attract attention of passers-by .sx The theft of the car , like that of the raid , showed every sign of having been carried out according to carefully laid plan .sx Using a car which had been hidden in a narrow one-way street , it would have been possible for the thieves to have driven past the raided shop , carrying their booty with them in the security of an unrecognised car .sx VANISHED ON FOOT .sx But the chase started by the lamplighter forced them to take risks in turning into another narrow street , and their well-laid plans were upset by the car barring their escape .sx The raiders vanished on foot , leaving a crowd gathered about the abandoned car and another crowd outside the raided shop .sx " It is impossible to say how much they have stolen , " the manager said .sx This is the second time in the last nine months Messrs .sx Barnett's shop has been raided .sx MORE PTOMAINE .sx Three Further Cases of Suspected Food Poisoning in Wigan .sx OVER 20 AFFECTED .sx Three further cases of suspected food poisoning in connection with the local epidemic were reported by the Wigan health authorities yesterday .sx Over twenty people , including five school-teachers , are affected , and a fourteen-year-old cotton operative , Ann Gambles , has died .sx In every instance the victims had eaten cooked heart or pork or both with stuffing .sx The inquest on the dead girl was opened and adjourned on Tuesday , certain organs having been forwarded to the Ministry of Health for analysis .sx Some of the patients collapsed , but all are now stated to be progressing favourably .sx HIGH TIDE AND GALE HAVOC ON SOUTH COAST .sx OVER 100 BUNGALOWS WRECKED .sx AND MANY FAMILIES HOMELESS .sx Giant Waves Damage Piers .sx Hotels and Shop Fronts .sx 70 m.p.h.
