FIRE AT PARIS EXHIBITION .sx Dutch Pavilion Burned .sx VALUABLE WORKS OF ART DESTROYED .sx ( From our own Correspondent ) .sx Paris , Sunday .sx A fire broke out early this morning in the pavilion of the Dutch East Indies , one of the largest and most sumptuous buildings of the Paris Colonial Exhibition .sx This pavilion , which was a replica of the temple of Bali , was largely built of timber and had a thatched roof , and it is not surprising that the flames should have spread with extreme rapidity .sx The heat was so intense that the numerous fire brigades which rushed to the scene could do no more than prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings .sx In a few hours the magnificent building , with its two pagodas , was reduced to a amouldering heap of ruins .sx The pavilion contained some very valuable exhibits , including Dutch paintings and other works of art , mostly belonging to Mr. Moojens , the eminent Dutch architect who built the pavilion .sx Nothing could be saved .sx The damage is estimated at 50,000,000 francs ( 400,000) .sx Princess Juliana , the heireas-apparent of the Netherlands , who is on a visit to Paris , rode to the Bois de Vincennes this morning to see the ruins .sx ESCAPE OF DANCERS .sx ( Reuter's Telegram .sx ) Paris , Sunday .sx The fire , which broke out in a small room containing the electric switchboard , spread rapidly , the light materials of which the pavilion was made burning like matchwood .sx The night watchman gave the alarm and then woke up the architect of the pavilion and his wife , who lived on the premises , and who just had time to escape by the window in their nightclothes .sx The architect's first thought was to run to an adjoining building in which a troupe of Javanese dancers was lodged .sx The dancers were quickly up and out , so there was no loss of life except the doves in a dovecot , which was burned to cinders .sx An army of firemen was rushed up and got the fire under control in an hour or two .sx Marshal Lyautey , the father of the exhibition , and other authorities were also soon on the scene .sx The architect stood transfixed with tears in his eyes watching the destruction of the pavilion .sx Princess Juliana and the wife of the Dutch Minister arrived later and were visibly affected at the sight of the charred ruins of the pavilion which the Queen of Holland inaugurated only a week ago .sx The Exchange telegram says that the Dutch Minister in Paris , M. Loubou , estimates the damage at about 640,000 .sx The treasures collected by Mr. Moojens represent over 25 years' constant search .sx BLAZING CAR ON ROAD .sx Four People Burned to Death .sx COLLISION AND FIRE .sx Two men and two women were burned to death and four people injured in a collision between two cars on the Watford by-pass , near Brockley Hill , Elatree , early yesterday .sx Two of the dead have been identified as Sybil Dickson , of Burdett Road , Bow , London , and Charles Bow , of Chorley New Road , Bolton .sx The second man is believed to be Mr. Milton Green , of the Middlesex Hospital , but the second woman was so badly burned that her description and age cannot be definitely ascertained .sx One of the injured burned his hand while trying to pull people out of the fire .sx After the smash the smaller of the two cars caught fire and was completely burned out .sx The other car was badly damaged in the collision .sx Police inquiries established that the four dead people were all in the small car .sx Mrs. Gough , who lives in a cottage overlooking the by-pass , told a reporter in an interview that shortly after midnight she heard a terrific crash .sx " I dashed to the bedroom window and saw a huge sheet of flame on the by-pass , and little black figures struggling in a roaring furnace .sx A terrific glare lit up the whole district .sx I could just make out that a car was burning .sx My husband and two daughters immediately rushed out while I telephoned for the police , the ambulance , and the fire brigade .sx " Cars Locked Head-On .sx Miss Gough , one of the daughters of Mrs. Gough , told a reporter the story of her effort to save one of the women who was burned to death .sx " Just as we got to the spot , " she said , " a woman rolled through the flames on to the road .sx She was conscious and her clothes were burning .sx I went forward to place my coat over her body , and she was taken away in a motor-car to hospital .sx Through the flames , I could see two people hanging out of the window of the blazing car .sx " It was a 'baby' car , and it was locked head-on with the larger car .sx The petrol which had flown all over the roadway was blazing , and we could not get near the cars .sx The people in the large car were apparently going in the Watford direction .sx Two of them were girls .sx " Mr. B. J. Gough said the road was a sheet of flame , and the blazing car lit up the whole roadway for miles .sx " It was terrible to hear the cries of the people inside , " he said , " and to be able to do nothing .sx " Immediately the Hendon Fire Brigade arrived , they put the fire out , and lifted out the charred remains of the three people inside the small car .sx " The two cars were interlocked and the small car was burned out completely .sx Strangely enough the other car did not catch fire itself , but the body was badly burned .sx " Mr. W. Dealey , a motor-coach driver , who was attracted to the spot by the flames , said in an interview :sx " As I jumped from my driving seat I saw a man stagger from behind the small car .sx His clothes were completely burned off , and as I turned a fire extinguisher o him he collapsed and rolled to the side of the road .sx He was so burned that it was obviously too late to do anything for him .sx " We could see another man inside the saloon .sx He was leaning over the steering wheel in a mass of flame , but it was impossible to do anything for him .sx " My conductor pulled a woman out of the saloon .sx There were two girls seated by the side of the road .sx One of them asked me if I thought she was very much hurt , and when I said 'No,' she said 'Let me go and help those things in the car,' but she could scarcely walk .sx " Mr. S. Turner , of Legatts Wood Avenue , Watford , the conductor referred to by Mr. Dehley , said he pulled one woman from the saloon car .sx " She was a mass of flames .sx I did the best I could with a fire extinguisher , but she died in the middle of the road .sx I saw two others - a man and a woman - stagger from behind one of the cars in flames .sx " 'BUS PASSENGERS KILLED .sx Collision with Wall at Foot of Hill .sx Two 'bus passengers have died of injuries received when the 'bus overturned at Mont Felard , Jersey , on Saturday .sx They were on the journey from the St. Mary and St. Laurence districts , and the smash occurred at the bottom of a hill , where their vehicle collided with a wall .sx Three other passengers lie in the local hospital , and their condition is critical .sx Overturned Charabanc :sx 11 injured .sx Eleven London people received serious injuries at Crowborough , Sussex , on Saturday when the charabanc in which they were riding overturned after being in collision with a car .sx All needed hospital treatment , and one of them who was detained is in a critical condition .sx The driver of the private car involved , and his mother , who was with him , are also in hospital suffering form injuries and shock .sx 'PLANES' COLLISION IN MID-AIR .sx Survivor's Story at Inquest .sx DIVE TO THE GROUND .sx A verdict of accidental death was returned at Netheravon Aerodrome , Wilts , yesterday , at the inquest on the three airmen who were killed in the aeroplane collision at Tidworth on Monday .sx They were Flying Officer Henry Charles Singleton ( 22 ) , Pilot Officer Roger Williams ( 23 ) , and Aircraftman No .sx 2 Reginald Henry Lanaway .sx Flight Lieutenant Thomas Bruce Cooper , acting adjutant , B Squadron Netheravon , said the two officers were qualified pilots , and the parachutes used were satisfactory and of the regulation pattern .sx The survivor of the crash , Aircraftman Robert Older , who was with Pilot Officer Williams , said they flew in the direction of Upavon and then changed towards Sidbury .sx He saw the machine piloted by Singleton , and warned Williams that it was coming into formation .sx Williams acknowledged the warning .sx Parachute Escape .sx They flew in formation several minutes and Singleton made a manvre which the witness thought was an indication that he meant to change his position from starboard to port .sx As he was passing he felt Singleton's machine strike the machine he was in .sx It appeared to come towards them at an angle of 45deg .sx He remembered no more , except hanging out of the machine on the starboard side when it was diving towards the ground .sx He pulled the rip cord of his parachute , which opened about 200 feet from the ground .sx As he was coming down he saw the other machine crash .sx SPIRIT OF SACRIFICE .sx Lady Haig's Poppy Day Appeal .sx ( From our Correspondent .sx ) YORK , WEDNESDAY .sx Speaking at a Poppy Day meeting at York to-day , Lady Haig said the country had shown a spirit of sacrifice .sx As a woman speaking to women , it was up to them now to help those in power to do the best for the country , and that could not be done by them without personal sacrifice by all .sx We should think , as we did after the war , that it is a privilege to do it .sx The Hon .sx Geoffrey Howard said Poppy Day was a national institution which should appeal to all , irrespective of party or social status .sx WIGTON , WEDNESDAY .sx The annual three days' show and sale of Cumberland-bred Clydesdale horses started at Wigton to-day , when there was a large entry of 867 horses of good class .sx The first day's sale comprised 276 two-year-old unbroken Clydesdale geldings and fillies .sx Buyers were very numerous , and trade was excellent .sx The awards and prices were as follows :sx - WARRINGTON LIBRARY EXTENSIONS .sx Opening Ceremony .sx ( From our Correspondent .sx ) WARRINGTON , WEDNESDAY .sx After being presented with a gold key by the Borough Surveyor of Warrington ( Mr. A. M. Ker ) the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres to-day opened the extensions to the Warrington Municipal Museum and Library .sx The improvements have taken a year to complete and they have resulted in a new lending library on the open-access system , an enlarged reference library , and a children's library .sx The museum and art galleries have also been enlarged and extended .sx The Mayor ( Alderman David Plinston ) traced the existence of the Manchester College , Oxford , to the formation of the Warrington Academy in 1757 .sx The Academy , he said , soon gained national fame .sx After 29 years it was removed to Manchester where it became the Manchester College , which had since been transferred to Oxford .sx It was quite true that Manchester College , Oxford , was really born in Warrington .sx Emphasising the value of the museum as a means of spreading knowledge and the need for the greater use of libraries , the Earl of Crawford said :sx " One of our great dangers is that we are overspecialising , and the great catholicity of knowledge , the wide outlook of the great scholars , is being lost .sx The substitute is the meticulous knowledge of the expert and the researcher .sx It is the learning of the microscope rather than the learning of the telescope .sx We ought , if possible , to combine the two .sx Through these turmoils and crises we ought to remember that intellectual pursuits would give us consolation .sx " MAN FOUND SHOT DEAD .sx A man found lying dead on Wimbledon Common , London , yesterday morning was identified in the afternoon as H. A. Bowe ( 35 ) , Abingdon Mansions , Kensington .sx When discovered , he was lying with his back against a small tree in a clump of trees .sx He was clasping a revolver in his right hand .sx Mr. Bowe left for his employment as usual on Tuesday morning , but did not return home at night .sx It is understood he had in his possession two letters , one addressed to the coroner and one to his mother .sx
