RACING FEELING THE PINCH , TOO !sx SCARCITY OF NEW OWNERS OF THE RIGHT TYPE .sx By GEOFFREY GILBEY .sx The first race meeting I ever went to was a small hunt meeting at Aylesbury .sx In the heavy-weight race there were two runners .sx One was ridden by Lord Gort , who afterwards gained a V.C. in the war .sx The other was ridden by Lord Dalmeny , who also had a fine war record .sx That was many years ago .sx Lord Dalmeny is , or course , now Lord Rosebery and the Senior Steward of the Jockey Club .sx His latest triumph is winning the St. Leger .sx A True Sportsman .sx WHEN owners win races they are always referred to as sportsmen .sx I can never understand why the man whose bank balance is big enough to enable him to run horses should necessarily be called a sportsman .sx No one , however , could say that Lord Rosebery is not a great all-round sportsman .sx He was a fine cricketer , and although he is no light weight he is an excellent man to hounds .sx His son , too , Lord Dalmeny , is worthily following in his footsteps both in the cricket and in the hunting field .sx During Lord Rosebery's term of Stewardship he has shown pluck as well as keenness , and it is in a great measure due to him that doping has , I hope , become extinct .sx The Stewards of the Jockey Club in their activities have every horse lover in this country behind them .sx Readers of these notes know my views on cruelty to horses .sx I would like to see every doper not only warned off but horse-whipped .sx Intensely Human .sx WHAT I do want people to realise though , is that the Stewards are human beings .sx Lord Rosebery is intensely human .sx Some one remarked to me last week that if the Stewards made a mistake they could never own it , as it would be so bad for the Turf .sx I have never heard such absurd nonsense .sx Prime Ministers , archbishops , headmasters , and even racing journalists have been known to make mistakes .sx Some racing journalists , for instance , underrated the capabilities of Sandwich !sx Hard Times .sx The sales last week showed us that there are still owners who are able to buy yearlings , and keep racing on its legs .sx This was tremendously cheering .sx At the same time , without being a pessimist or an alarmist , it must be perfectly obvious that racing must feel the pinch as it has done in other countries .sx I am told that the attendances at French race meetings , except on Sundays , are terribly small .sx The Stewards of the Jockey Club may have a difficult task in keeping racing on its legs .sx If the Stewards were the superhuman people they are supposed to be by some people they would press a button and many new owners of the right type would be produced .sx A Bargain .sx IT would be interesting to know how many new owners bought yearlings at Doncaster .sx I am intensely proud that my article of a fortnight ago produced one new owner .sx After reading my article a man wrote to me and told me that he got an enormous amount of pleasure out of racing , and that I brought home to him that it was up to him to pay towards the sport he loved so much .sx I met him , and found that he was the ideal type of owner that Lord Rosebery said a few weeks ago the Turf wants .sx He cares nothing for betting ; he is a hardworking man and respected by all who know him .sx At Doncaster I bought him a yearling , and as I was prepared to go to twice what I gave for her , and was offered a good profit for her afterwards , it will be understood that I hope to have got him a bargain .sx The Type .sx MEN like this are the type of men we want .sx We do not want the owner who only buys horses to advertise himself of to enable him to get into so-called society .sx If a man owns a good horse it is amazing the way in which people bow and scrape to him to his face .sx Cameronian's Failure .sx THERE is nothing really to be said about the St. Leger except to condole with Mr. Dewar , Fred Darling , and Fred Fox on the Cameronian failure .sx What happened to him must for ever remain a mystery .sx There have been other unsolved mysteries in racing .sx Cameronian's display is inexplicable .sx Why a usually normal horse should run like a mad horse and be perfectly well next day is something I cannot hope to explain .sx Fred Darling , the most brilliant of trainers , had the horse at its very best .sx He was ridden by Fred Fox , who knows him so well , and who has been riding in such magnificent form .sx If a crowd is going to upset a horse surely the Epsom crowd will do it .sx It is not often I hope a horse is lame , but I certainly hoped Cameronian would pull up lame when I saw him toiling hopelessly in the rear as he passed the winning post .sx If he had not been lame we should have understood how the mighty have fallen .sx Stone Cold .sx I AM longing to see the real Cameronian winning races as he did as Ascot .sx I expressed the opinion before the race that he might not stay the full Leger course , but there can have been nobody in this world who could possibly have expected the horse to be stone cold as he came into the straight .sx There can be no solution to the horse's running , any more than there can be to an astounding happening to a horse last year .sx Future Winners .sx READERS now want future winners .sx My first three double , fear nothing , is Sonny , who ran so well at Folkestone on Monday .sx Gosden , has done exceedingly well with this ex-plater .sx If he runs at Fontwell to-morrow in the Pegasus Cup I expect he will be all the rage .sx Follow Sonny .sx While we are on the subject of jumpers we may be well advised to add to our list two horses worth following - Formorian and Don Patrick - neither of whom was disgraced at Folkestone .sx Jumping will soon be with us , and I shall be at Fontwell to-morrow in the hopes that I may find some good future winners .sx Bookmakers' Benefit .sx NEXT week I intend to take a glance at the Cesarowitch and Cambridgeshire weights and put up a few likely horses for those who take a delight in subscribing to the bookmakers' annual benefit .sx A friend asked me to take a double .sx I advised her to take Old Orkney and Lovelace II .sx The price offered about my first pick , Flying Argosy , is too absurd to consider .sx CALVADOS AND RACEDALE .sx A LONG-SHOT DOUBLE FOR AUTUMN HANDICAPS .sx " Sunday Express " Headquarters Correspondent .sx NEWMARKET , Saturday Night .sx FIRST impressions are often the best , and on seeing the weights for the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire I liked the look of Calvados and Racedale , and they may make a promising double for those who like to take a long shot .sx .. Salmon Leap could not be doing better in his preparation for the Newbury Autumn Cup , and he has only to keep well to be my confident selection .sx Nitakrit strode out so well in a gallop with Oletta , Brumeux and Ardglass this morning that she should win the Durham Handicap at Yarmouth .sx .. Holmwood did not show his true form at York , and after seeing him give a brilliant display in a gallop with Largition and Osculator this morning I shall follow him for his selected engagement this week .sx A WARM ONE .sx Onyx is likely to make it warm for the opposition in the West of Scotland Foal plate at Ayr on Wednesday .sx .. Vincent Square is now at the top of his form , and he should win the Kyle Stakes .sx .. Ortygia , ridden by Perryman , displaced the fine speed in a gallop with three others this morning , and I shall be surprised if she does not win the Great Yarmouth Maiden Plate .sx If Glee Maiden will only reproduce the speed she showed in a gallop this morning she would not be long in winning the Montgomerie Nursery at Ayr .sx .. Leopardus is a faint-hearted animal , but he should beat the moderate opposition in the North Denes Selling Plate at Yarmouth .sx BROWN JACK'S NEXT RACE .sx Brown Jack , who ran second in the Doncaster Cup , will compete in the Newbury Autumn Cup , if he is quite well .sx He has top weight of 9st .sx 10lbs .sx , and Ivor Anthony states that this may well be his last race this season .sx ELECTRIC TOTE AT LEICESTER .sx The Racecourse Betting Control Board propose to operate the electric tote at the Leicester meeting on September 21 and 22 .sx SANSOLENA SCORES AT ALEXANDRA PARK .sx EASY NURSERY WIN FOR SUMMER PLANET .sx THE Alexandra Park executive prepared a capital card for their meeting yesterday , and it was unfortunate that heavy rain and mist rather spoilt the sport from a spectator's point of view .sx Nevertheless , fields were good throughout .sx The principal event on the car , the September Handicap of 300 , attracted some good milers , the best backed being Copin and Sansolena .sx The former , who was ridden by Gordon Richards , ran well to gain third place , but she met more than her match in Sansolena , who had previously won over the course , and this was her third successive victory .sx The Hampstead Nursery , run over a mile and 150 yards , was won by the favourite , Summer Plant , the mount of Gordon Richards .sx The colt had been unplaced in his four previous races , but he now stayed on in fine style , and making practically all the running , won by five lengths from the well-fancied Bacht .sx Details :sx - CARDIFF LUCKY .sx Southend Back Heads Into His Own Goal .sx By PROFESSOR .sx Southend United 1 , Cardiff City 1 .sx Cardiff City gained a well-earned point at Southend , where the result was a draw of one goal all .sx Cardiff were the more impressive side , but Southend should have won on the run of the play .sx For Crompton failed to score from a penalty-kick awarded when Hardy handled the ball , while the Cardiff goal was a " gift " from French .sx The Southend right back headed a shot from Harris into his own net , when it appeared that Moore would have cleared easily .sx The visitors combined magnificently in the first half , and only splendid goalkeeping by Moore saved his side .sx Cardiff did not deserve to be in arrears when , two minutes before half-time , Pike busted his way between the backs and scored with a great shot .sx Southend were more effective in the second half , but with Shankly injured their attack faded away .sx Pike and Crompton made several praiseworthy efforts to snatch a winning goal , but Farquharson allowed nothing to pass him .sx McGraith , who deputised for Robbins on the Cardiff left wing , made an excellent partner for Jones , and the pair gave French a busy afternoon .sx Galbraith was Cardiff's best half-back .sx Southend were unlucky .sx Palace Not At Their Best .sx Simpson's Virility Sadly Missed .sx Points Shared .sx By SYDENHAM .sx Crystal Palace 1 , Queen's Park Rangers 1 .sx THE value of Peter Simpson for Palace could not have been better illustrated than in their drawn match against Queen's Park Rangers at Selhurst Park yesterday .sx An injured ligament kept Simpson out , while Lane and Butler , the other inside forwards , were also absent .sx The Palace , except in front of goal , showed up as well as usual , but always at the vital moment they were like a flock of sheep without a shepherd .sx The Rangers , still without a victory , were outplayed for three-quarters of the first half , but when that great leader , George Goddard , headed a neat goal , for them thirteen minutes before the interval , they took a new lease of life , and provided quite as many thrills , in a drenching rain , as their opponents .sx I thought the Palace kept the ball too close in the heavy going ; the good-hearted kicking of Pollard and Hall , the Rangers' full-backs , was much more profitable .sx At times , the new Palace defence gave one the " shivers , " though R. Dunn came out of a trying ordeal in goal with credit .sx
