Peace in Sight in the Rossendale Church Dispute .sx WHERE IS MR. CALEB ?sx APPEAL FOR 50 TO PAY RESIGNATION FEES .sx LUMB PEACE HOPE .sx Vicar Said to be Staying at Bispham .sx From Our Special Correspondent .sx Blackpool , Monday .sx After being a central figure in a bitter dispute which since 1929 has attracted the attention of Church people throughout the country to the parish of St. Michaels's , Lumb-in-Rossendale , the Rev. T. Caleb , vicar of the parish , is now believed to be spending a quiet holiday at Bispham , Blackpool .sx His sudden departure from the village on Saturday night was apparently kept a close secret , for it was not until the morning service yesterday that the congregation became aware of his absence .sx The services yesterday were conducted by the Rev. Gower Jones , rector of St. Luke's , Lightbowne , Manchester , who asked the congregation to pray for the vicar and his family .sx The Rev. Gower Jones , it will be remembered , was the clergyman responsible for bringing about a truce in the conflict between Mr. Caleb and his congregation in February of last year .sx VISIT TO CHURCH .sx The secret of Mr. Caleb's whereabouts is being closely kept by the few who know , but it is reliably reported that he is now staying at Bispham with his wife recuperating from the nervous strain caused by his experiences during the past few months , when police were called in at the morning and evening services to eject members of the congregation .sx After a thorough search to-day , however , I failed to find Mr. Caleb in Bispham .sx The reports that he is staying here , however , are strengthened by the fact that yesterday a clergyman , who closely resembled the vicar of St. Michael's , attended the morning service at All Hallows Church , Bispham .sx The Rev. H. Ward , vicar of All Hallows , told me in an interview that he had been told that at the morning service yesterday a strange clergyman occupied a pew with a woman .sx " I was not here myself , " said Mr. Ward .sx " I was preaching in Rochdale and the services at my church were conducted by a substitute from Liverpool .sx " From the description that I have received of the strange clergyman , however , there seems to be little doubt that he was Mr. Caleb accompanied by his wife .sx " The clergyman did not introduce himself to anyone , and left immediately after the service .sx He did not turn up at the evening service and has not been seen since .sx " After further enquiries I was told that Mr. Caleb was staying at the house of the Rev. Blakoe , of the Red Bank Road , Bispham , a clergyman who formerly lived in the Rossendale district .sx When I called at his house , however , Mr Blakoe said that he had not seen Mr. Caleb and denied that he had been staying at his house .sx APPEAL THROUGH PRESS .sx " There is a very hopeful prospect of a happy solution to the difficulties of Lumb-in-Rossendale , " said the Rev. Gower-Jones to a Manchester Evening News .sx representative to-day .sx " Mr. Caleb has gone away to Bispham broken down in health by the worry of this dispute , which has been so distressing from all points of view , and it is his intention to resign .sx " But before he can do so there are certain fees to be paid and he has not the money , and therefore I am appealing through the Press for financial assistance from anybody who is anxious to see a speedy termination of the deadlock .sx We shall require at least 50 .sx " You may take it that Mr. Caleb will not conduct any more services there .sx I shall take them again next Sunday , and it is possible that his successor will conduct them the Sunday following .sx " PONY'S OWNER FOUND .sx Animal's Picture Seen in " Evening News " .sx For the second time within a few weeks , the Manchester Evening News has been instrumental in tracing the owner of a stray pony which had been found by the police and had been kept in the police stables at the Whitworth-street Police Station , Manchester .sx The only clue to the pony's ownership were the initials J. W. , which were branded on its back , and the pony had been in custody for over a week when on Saturday the police asked the " Manchester Evening News to publish a picture and a story .sx The picture and story were seen by the owner who lives in Bedbury , and he claimed the lost animal on Saturday night .sx It had strayed from Bredbury to Cemetary Lane , Gorton .sx The other occasion when the " Manchester Evening News " restored a pony to its owner was on May 16 .sx The picture and story in this instance were also seen on the same day that they appeared in the paper .sx LORD ASHTON .sx Freedom of Hyde Conferred .sx From Our Own Correspondent .sx Hyde , Monday .sx Hyde Town Council met this afternoon and on the proposition of Alderman Westbrook , deputy mayor , seconded by Alderman Fawley , the Freedom of the Borough was conferred on Lord Ashton of Hyde in recognition of 35 years' service to the town and the nation .sx Afterwards , in the Public Hall , the Mayor , Alderman Middleton , before a large assembly , handed to Lord Ashton the silver casket and scroll .sx Prince George to See Pottery Wonders .sx ROYAL TO VISIT HANLEY .sx JULY 1 AND 2 FIXED FOR INFORMAL TOUR .sx GUEST OF LORD EDNAM .sx May Fly to Open New Aerodrome .sx SIR FRANCIS JOSEPH , president of the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce , has been advised that Prince George will pay an informal visit to Stoke-on-Trent on July 1 and 2 to see the industries of the district and visit various potteries .sx The factories to be visited will be selected by the British Potteries Manufacturers' Federation .sx It is anticipated that Prince George will be the guest of Viscount Ednam at Himley Hall , Near Dudley .sx It is thought that he will fly to Stoke , and may open the new aerodrome at Meir .sx It is also hoped that Prince George will visit Hanley flower show on July 2 .sx Prince George will carry out the third of his industrial tours of England when he visits the Duchy of Cornwall Estates of his brother , the Prince of Wales , at the end of this month .sx At St. Austell he will inspect the china clay works , and will then go by seaplane to Looe , where he will receive some of the local industries .sx During a visit to Bovey Tracey Prince George will go to the Devon Tile Factory .sx He will fly to Newquay to open the Newquay Cottage Hospital on June 26 .sx Prince George will return to London by air .sx LITTLE THEATRE FOR BOLTON ?sx Option Secured for Lease of Premises .sx APPEAL FOR 300 .sx From Our Own Correspondent .sx Bolton , Tuesday .sx Bolton's Little Theatre Scheme has matured to such an extent that it is probable that premises will be secured within the next few weeks and that plays will be produced next winter .sx The chairman of the general committee , Mr. H. P. Hollingdrake , who is vice-president of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association , told me to-day :sx " Much progress has been made with the scheme for inaugurating a Little Theatre for Bolton .sx " The General Committee has met every week since April , and two sub-committees have considered the scheme in detail .sx " An option on very favourable terms has been secured for the remainder of a lease of the Baths Assembly Rooms , Lower Bridgeman-street , Bolton , which are admirably suited for the purpose .sx Appeal for Funds .sx " The option expires at the end of this month .sx " An appeal for funds has already been circulated .sx The response to it has been encouraging but not adequate , and 300 is urgently needed for the option and stage equipment which will be required .sx " If this modest sum is secured the committee propose to arrange for a series of productions - probably six in number - of representative dramas of literary merit between October and April next .sx " VANDALS ON PIKE .sx Stones of 200-Year-old Tower Dislodged .sx Bolton , Tuesday .sx Vandalism at the historic watch tower on Rivington Pike , near Bolton , has caused considerable indignation in the district .sx Officials of the Rivington Corporation waterworks , under whose control the tower comes , have discovered that large stones have been pulled from the wall of the tower facing Horwich .sx This has left a gaping hole in the wall of the tower , and it is possible to see the interior of the building .sx The tower , which was built nearly 200 years ago , is looked upon with something akin to reverence by the people of Rivington , who are very anxious to discover the person or persons responsible for this act of vandalism .sx " The stones are considerable , too large and too high for them to have been dislodged by mischievous boys , " an official of the Rivington Corporation Waterworks told a Manchester Evening News representative .sx " It is obviously the work of adults .sx We are continually finding damage to walls and fences about the Pike .sx " " I wish we could catch the people responsible ; we would make an example of them .sx " TOWN'S JUBILEE .sx Children's Festival at Hyde To-day .sx From Our Own Correspondent .sx Hyde , Tuesday .sx To-day is children's day in the Hyde jubilee celebrations .sx This afternoon over 4,000 elementary schoolchildren marched from their respective schools wearing the jubilee medal and assembled on the market square .sx At Planters' Fields a programme of entertainment was provided .sx There was one accident last night to mar the celebrations .sx Norman Robinson , 15 , Dale-street , Audenshaw , was cycling through Peel-street , and was so interested in the aeroplane display that his machine skidded and he was thrown heavily , suffering a fractured leg .sx SECRET BETTING DENS .sx SLUM YARDS WITH TAPE MACHINES AND PHONES .sx HAMPERED POLICE .sx Raids at the Rate of One a Month .sx By a Special Correspondent .sx HIDDEN away in the heart of slum areas , illegal betting on a highly organised scale is reported to flourish at Stockport in yards ingeniously adapted for the purposes of the bookmaker's trade .sx Fitted with tape machines , private telephones , and with " libraries " or sporting papers for the guidance of the hundreds of men who frequent them these secret betting lairs have proved difficult to trace by the police .sx During the past twelve months they have been raided at the rate of one a month , but in most cases not until clever espionage work had been undertaken to procure the evidence necessary for a prosecution .sx FINES UNAVAILING .sx It is known , however , that the prosecutions and fines have not appreciably diminished the numbers of these betting yards , and certainly have not served to suppress them .sx A well-informed person estimates their number to be a dozen , but there is every indication that they considerably exceed this figure .sx When a Manchester Evening News representative called at the Stockport police headquarters and asked Mr. Rowbottom , the Chief Constable , what the attitude of the police was towards these betting yards , he said that they were definitely illegal .sx POLICE ACT .sx " In Stockport , as in any other town , " he stated , " there are back-street bookmakers who conduct a legitimate betting business so far as we know .sx " When we receive complaints or information we naturally act upon it .sx Betting yards are illegal and it is a duty to suppress them .sx " These places are being rounded up at the rate of about one a month .sx Immediately we have knowledge of them we do all in our power to suppress them .sx You can depend upon it that if we hear of any steps will be taken at once .sx 100 MEN MEET .sx Mr. Rowbottom was surprised when I informed him that I had already spent more than an hour in one of these yards among nearly a hundred men less than a stone's throw from a traffic officer .sx " We have no knowledge of its existence , " he said .sx " Naturally the man on point duty would give his whole attention to directing traffic unless the matter came directly to his notice .sx " As a rule these places are not conducted by bookmakers but by their agents whose fines , when they are brought to book , are paid by their employers .sx " If there is a place in Stockport where illegal betting is taking place on such a scale , the matter will be investigated immediately .sx " Alderman J. W. Craig , Chairman of the Stockport Watch Committee , said that the question of illegal betting on a large scale had never been discussed officially by the Watch Committee .sx
