Stevens , J.P. , this afternoon .sx Owing to the funeral of Alderman J. Lord Thompson , J.P. , the ceremony was deferred for an hour .sx The school is the last word in modern design , and it is situated in one of the rapidly growing districts of Brighton , and the school will accommodate 288 children .sx The buildings have six classrooms which face on to a glazed verandah , and the windows are so arranged that a maximum of fresh air and sunshine may be obtained .sx Heating and lighting are supplied by electricity .sx All the interior is plastered and finished with cement dadoes .sx The exterior , rough cast with Keymertiled roofs , affords a particularly attractive appearance , and late , when the sloping ground next to Hertford-road is grassed as a lawn , a pleasant setting will be given .sx The trees have been well preserved .sx Before and after the opening a large number of well-known people inspected the school .sx The Chairman of the Education Committee , Councillor H. Hone , presided at the ceremony , which was largely attended , and with Councillor J. N. Ward ( Chairman of the Managers ) received the Mayor and Mayoress ( Alderman S. C. Thompson , J.P. , and Mrs. Thompson ) , and Alderman Stevens .sx The School's Amenities .sx The Mayor , who spoke from a fern-decorated platform , said the Education Committee were to be congratulated on having to some extent anticipated the need for the school , for in that district a new town was growing .sx The children would have the advantage of a school built on the most modern lines and would get every possible benefit from both sunshine and air .sx One up-to-date feature he had notice was that the school was warmed electrically , and he was pleased to see also that there was a school hall .sx If ever children were happy in school they would be here .sx The Mayor commented with pleasure upon the fact that it was designed by a Brighton architect , Mr. Gilbert M. Simpson , F.R.I.B.A. , and built by a Brighton firm of builders , Messrs James Bodle , Ltd. .sx Councillor Hone said there had been a great need for the school .sx It had been built in record time - two years - and it was one of the best the Brighton Education Committee had erected .sx It was the only school heated throughout with electricity .sx Third New School .sx Alderman Stevens , who has devoted nearly half a century of his life to educational work , said Brighton had opened two new schools within six months and this was the third .sx He congratulated the people living in the neighbourhood on having so well equipped a school to which their children could go :sx and declared the building open with the wish that God's blessing would rest upon the scholars , parents , teachers and managers in all its future course .sx A vote of thanks to Alderman Stevens was proposed by Councillor Ward and seconded by Councillor W. Matsell and W. Parsons , the accompanist being Miss Ivy Parsons .sx The success of the evening was largely due to the visit of a number of friends from the Brighton Lodges .sx ROMAN VILLA AT SOUTHWICK .sx MORE INTERESTING DISCOVERIES .sx FUTURE OF THE WORK OF EXCAVATION .sx Mr. S. E. Winbolt , M.A. , has been at the British-Roman Villa excavation work at Southwick throughout the past week , but has now had to hand it over to his lieutenant , Mr. C. Richard Ward , son of Mr. C. Osman Ward , of Southwick , to carry on .sx Mr Winbolt has been on the task for a number of weeks , but his engagements in other parts now demand attention after triumphant archeological discovery .sx Mr. Richard Ward has been associated with Mr. Winbolt as pupil and colleague for some time , in Southwick and elsewhere , and the future of this work of research is therefore in good hands .sx For some time prior to the operations commencing , Mr. Ward and Mr. Salmon ( local hon .sx secretary of the Sussex Archeological Society ) had had their eyes on the site and patiently awaited developments , it being a local tradition that Roman remains existed .sx When construction of a new east-west through road commenced they were able to take action with a view to commencing excavations , with the splendid results which have transpired .sx What of the Future ?sx Members of the Southwick Urban Council have been in touch with Mr. Ward on the question of the future of the enterprise , the local governing body having been approached with the object of keeping the foundations open .sx It is understood that a proposal will be made that if the site be acquired for posterity the Urban Council should undertake the maintenance and preservation of the works .sx So many finds of pottery , coins , etc. , have already been made , that it has been suggested it would form the nucleus of a most attractive museum which would prove a self-supporting institution if it were provided on the site and looked after by the Council .sx An aerial photograph of the excavations has been taken , and Mr. T. G Ward ( a brother of Mr. Richard Ward ) , and Mr. G. D. Young of Worthing , an enthusiastic voluntary helper who has been on the works without missing a day all the time excavation has been in progress , have prepared an excellent plan of the foundations , which will prove of great future interest and value .sx More Finds .sx Further interesting details have come to light .sx During the excavation of the southern buttress wall , about 100 feet long to the south of the new road , and at its eastern end , there has been unearthed a praefurnium or stockehole , of a hypocaust or heating chamber .sx This was found laid with flat red tiles , which were considerably burnt and flaked off when touched .sx The bottom tile was of considerable size - 2ft .sx square - and with five other tiles was in situ in a line .sx On the right of the foremost tile was found the only remaining of what was once one of the pillars supporting the room above .sx This was also found in position .sx The floor of the hypocaust is of concrete , and the hypocaust itself is about 1ft .sx wide .sx These evidence that at that corner of the courtyard were situated the baths , the fact being further substantiated by the finding of fragments of tesselated pavement ; small red tesserae painted white .sx Unfortunately the remainder is underneath the new road .sx There has also been opened out an apse shaped end of a building which generally betokens a bathroom .sx The floor was found to rest on two exceptionally thick mortar walls , and careful probing revealed that the floor contained fragments of tesselated paving in situ .sx This was made of small red tesserae , set in cement , and pointed .sx Such was the first find of tesserae actually set in mortar that has been recovered in fragments on the spot .sx A Fortunate Circumstance .sx It is a fortunate circumstance that although the previous excavations of 1815 and 1845 were of little use to posterity , in that no record was preserved , and any objects which may have been discovered have been scattered , they resulted in no injury to the solid foundations , which vary from 2 feet to 1 feet in thickness .sx Hence Mr. Winbolt and his assistants have now by the result of their activities unearthed 350 feet of " footings" , lying only a foot or two below the surface .sx As previously intimated , the walls are precisely north and south and east and west , with the long frontage to the sunny south and the sea .sx A great deal of the excavation has been completed in a manner appealing to the archeologist , the foundations having been bared and the soil levelled so as to throw the ground plan into beautiful relief .sx It will probably not be possible to clear the whole site in this perfect way under the present voluntary scheme of work , as considerable time and labour would be required , and there being no funds wherewith to meet the expense .sx It being highly desirable that the work should be completed , the efforts that are being made to preserve the site to posterity will have great sympathy .sx Seven Rooms .sx Seven rooms have already been levelled , one being 22ft .sx by 19ft .sx , the walls being of flint , in buff-coloured mortar .sx There is now a main block of buildings about 70ft .sx deep ; while to the south is a courtyard 65ft .sx square .sx Then , under the newly-cut east-to-west road running through the site , are lost rooms which should have come just north of the south corridor .sx As a matter of fact , a most interesting portion of the site of the villa lies underneath the new road .sx Among the interesting recent discoveries are further fragments of Samean ware , being the stamp of the maker , " Of Pat-ric , " a potter of La Graufesenque , probably about the date 80AD .sx to 120AD .sx
