ANOTHER TROPHY FOR TRANENT JUNIORS .sx BY SCRUTINEER .sx TRANENT JUNIORS , 2 ; MUSSELBURGH BRUNTONIANS , 1 .sx Tranent Juniors added to their honours yesterday the Thornton Shield by defeating Musselburgh Bruntonians by 2 goals to 1 in the final tie at Easter Road .sx Possessed of the Midlothian League Championship Cup , the East of Scotland Cup , and now the Thornton Shield , the East Lothian side can well sustain their claim to be supreme in the East .sx Yesterday their task was not a really difficult one , and if the margin was narrow the losers' consolation goal only came in the last minute of the game .sx In the first half Tranent were immeasurably superior , and the ball was seldom far from Paterson .sx The winners' forwards played delightful football , and manfully though the Bruntonians' half-backs stuck to their task they were often overrun .sx The backs were a stiffer obstacle , however , and Paterson , in goal , took the eye with much clever saving .sx His anticipation and intuition were good .sx He had to admit defeat after sixteen minutes .sx Law scored a delightful goal after weaving his way past a host of opponents .sx The diminutive centre was the spearhead of the Tranent attack , and took a lot of holding .sx His leading-out work was exceptionally good , and his quick dashes on goal were spectacular .sx He was the personality in the game , and when he headed the second goal in twenty-eight minutes , after he and Somerville had combined cleverly , the crowd rose to him .sx The second portion of the game was a trifle tame , with Tranent uppermost for the greater period , and with Law still active .sx Twice Paterson made desperate saves from the little centre when all seemed lost .sx In the closing stages the Bruntonians had their brightest spell , but a fatal hesitancy and want of understanding prevented them from counting until the last minute , when M'Lennan scored from fairly long range with a shot which reached the net high up .sx Just prior to this what seemed rather a legitimate claim for a penalty kick against Telfer , the Tranent back , for his manner of tacking Bell was turned down .sx On the winning side Nelson had little to do in goal , but he did that well .sx Telfer and Cunningham - the latter is signed by Hearts - were a pair of stylish backs , and the halfs , without reaching great heights , played well to their forwards .sx The latter were a long way ahead of the Musselburgh five , with Law , M'Ivor and Somerville outstanding .sx The Musselburgh defence took all the credit due to their side , especially Paterson and Mackie .sx The half-backs were always playing against the collar , while the forwards lacked understanding and were slow .sx Attendance , 3000 .sx DUNDEE , 3 ; GLASGOW , 2 .sx The Scottish Deaf and Dumb Cup final tie was played at ames Park , Inverkeithing , yesterday , the contesting teams being Dundee and Glasgow , when the former were the winners by three goals to two .sx In the first half Glasgow scored a good goal from the left , and Dundee equalised from a penalty .sx On the resumption , Dundee began to wear down the lighter Glasgow team , but it was the latter who first took the lead from a good shot from thirty yards out .sx Dundee then applied the pressure , and latterly got two fine goals .sx President Wilson , of the Fife Football Association was present to hand over the cup , but a protest by the Glasgow team robbed him of the opportunity .sx LAST NIGHT'S FOOTBALL GOSSIP .sx Glasgow will get the first sight of Jim M'Coll in Leith Athletic's colours .sx The veteran Hib is due at Firhill tomorrow evening , in the first of the five-a-side competitions in connection with Glasgow Civic and Empire Week .sx G. Morgan , the crack right-back of Bowhill , Fifeshire .sx The lad has a splendid record as a junior .sx If given time to fit in , he should be an asset to the Dens Park club .sx Bennett , Glengarry's outside-right , has signed for Benburb .sx John Forsyth , the centre-forward of Kilsyth Rangers , has signed for Alloa Athletic .sx He was married last week to a Bridgeton girl , and the happy couple are now in residence in Alloa .sx Stevenson , the right-back of Rothesay Royal Victoria , is interesting St Mirren and Motherwell .sx Meantime , he has signed again for the " Royalists .sx " The replay of the Ayrshire Junior Challenge Cup final between Glenbuck Cherrypickers and Lugar Boswell is to take place at Old Cumnock on Wednesday night .sx It will be played to a finish .sx Heard that Third Lanark will wind up the financial year about all square .sx There might be 50 in it , either way .sx The success of the carnival run by the Supporters' Club has exceeded all expectations .sx Carruthers , left-back , and Kerr , left-half-back , who played for Paisley Hillside in the semi-final of the Juvenile Intermediate Cup , are likely starters for the junior ranks next season .sx Maryhill and St Roch are interested .sx Neilston Victoria would also like to sign Mooney , centre-forward .sx Manager John Morrison , of St Mirren , attended the Lanarkshire Junior Final tie at Douglas Park , Hamilton , yesterday .sx Kenny , the Burnbank custodian , is provisionally signed for the Paisley club .sx BOXING .sx FREDDY HUGHES' NARROW WIN .sx DUNDEE LAD CATCHES A TARTAR .sx Freddy Hughes ( Blantyre ) , one of the leading Scottish feather-weights , scored a narrow , but thoroughly deserved points victory over an exceedingly clever English lad in Tony Butcher , of Liverpool , at the Ring , Glasgow , last night .sx Butcher commenced in fast and elusive style , and like a flash went in and out to land light , but accurate lefts to the Scot's face .sx Despite these punches , however , Hughes kept crowding in , and was decidedly ahead in close quarter work , and taking command and the aggressive sent damaging hooks to Butcher's head .sx The latter , as the fight progressed , was not so much on his toes as formerly , and Hughes continued to be on top , but found the English lad a most elusive target .sx Neither could land the telling blow , but stood toe-to-toe and exchanged punches amidst a welter of excitement .sx Butcher faded out near the end of the scheduled ten rounds .sx Smiling Jim Fenton ( Dundee ) caught a tartar in another lad from the Liverpool stable in Bert Wallace , of that town .sx The latter won well on points after ten hard rounds .sx Fenton started out in brisk style , but he early found Wallace was able to trade blows equally well , and possessed a better left hand lead than he possessed .sx Fenton , however , was not idle , and contrived , by dogged plodding , to gradually take much of the " starch " out of Wallace , and just missed with well-intentioned rights to the head .sx In the ninth , Fenton did really well , and troubled Wallace with a vicious right hook , which made the latter cover up .sx In a six round preliminary J. Campbell ( Calton ) defeated J. M'Bride ( Calton ) on points , the pace being fast throughout .sx Bob Berry ( Govan ) , who is fast earning a reputation as a damaging fighter , scored his third successive k.o. victory when he put J. Sherry ( Parkhead ) outpointed Bob Lynch ( South Side ) over six fast rounds in the closing bout .sx Cambridge A.A.C. .sx The Cambridge A.A.C. , Cowcaddens , Glasgow , staged an interesting series of amateur contests and competitions in the club premises last night .sx In a spirited contest over four rounds E. M'Eachran ( Glasgow Central A.A.C. ) beat E. Lyner ( Paisley and District A.A.C. ) on points after an extremely hard bout .sx M'Eachran punched the better , and got home effectively to the head and body , with hard right hooks .sx Lyner , however , proved a tough proposition , and fought doggedly on till the end .sx Results :sx - MAHARG'S CHALLENGER .sx Dick Burke , Liverpool , was at the Ring , Glasgow , last night , and intimated his willingness to meet Jim Maharg , the Scottish title-holder .sx Jim M'Onie has offered to stage the bout .sx Bobby Shields , the Scots heavy-weight champion , is down at Leicester on an important mission .sx He is acting as chief sparring partner to Larry Gains , heavy-weight champion of Canada , who meets Phil Scott for the British title in June .sx ERIC LIDDELL'S RECORD BEATEN .sx Magnificent Performances at Edinburgh .sx There was a record number of events for the Edinburgh University sports , which were carried through at Craiglockhart yesterday .sx F.
