Daisy's Beauty Parlour .sx Summer Arms .sx BARE arms are so popular that it is essential that they should be an attribute to beauty .sx But , however beautifully-shaped and tapered they may be , their beauty can be marred by the unsightly look of the skin texture , especially the back of the arm , which no cosmetic can effectively hide .sx When the back of the arms looks coarse and the skin is rough and inclined to be " goosey , " the remedy is simple .sx Judicious daily rubbing with a loofah and plenty of hot soapy water will effectively remove the unsightly blemishes and improve the shape of the arm .sx Vibration restores life and this rubbing produces the necessary vibration which will give the clogged pores of the skin an opportunity of functioning in this natural way .sx The arms should afterwards be well-rubbed with a lotion consisting of equal parts of eau de cologne , rosewater , lemon juice and glycerine .sx To Whiten the Arms .sx To whiten arms that have become tanned and brown with the sun , dab them over every night with fresh lemon juice diluted with milk , using half as much milk as lemon juice .sx Arms that appear red and rough-looking can be made smooth and white if the following treatment is given every night for a week .sx First bathe the arms well with warm water to open the pores , dry with a clean soft towel and then apply a bleaching paste made from this receipt .sx Make a paste of almond flour or meal with a little hot milk .sx Spread this thickly on one arm at a time and cover with a three-inch gauze bandage , wound loosely round the entire arm and fastening it with a safety pin .sx This not only whitens the skin , but gives it a finer texture .sx If the arms are only slightly red , they may be treated with glycerine and borax .sx Place one ounce of powdered borax in a jar and add four tablespoonfuls of glycerine .sx Stir the ingredients well , then place the jar in a saucepan of hot water on the stove and leave until the borax is dissolved .sx Remove from the heat and stir occasionally until cold .sx Superfluous hair on the arms is a trial to many women .sx If the hairs are fine and downy they may be bleached with peroxide of hydrogen .sx Or the growth can be simply and harmlessly removed with a piece of toilet pumice stone and a cake of soap .sx Smear the pumice stone thickly with soap and rub firmly but gently over the arms , taking care not to roughen the skin .sx Repeat this treatment two or three times a week until the growth disappears .sx A Depilatory .sx A depilatory will be required to remove thick , coarse hairs .sx The following formula has proved most reliable .sx The depilatory consists of equal parts of starch and freshly-prepared barium sulphide .sx Immediately before use , moisten with water and apply the paste to the hairy part .sx After ten minutes remove with a bone knife and anoint the part with cream to allay any irritation that may be caused .sx The arms can be made gratifyingly beautiful by using the method given here .sx First mop the skin with warm water from wrist to shoulder .sx The object of this is not only to cleanse but also to soften the skin and open the pores .sx In the meantime , soak pieces of soft , old linen in sweet almond oil or olive oil .sx These wrappings should be four inches in width .sx Place them firmly about the arms , but not tight enough to stop circulation .sx It is important to put thin oiled silk over these wrappings to prevent the grease from rubbing off .sx If the treatment cannot be tried , good results follow by rubbing the arms with oil .sx Cleanse the skin with warm water , dry thoroughly and apply the oil with a gentle , circular motion .sx Massage for five minutes , then wipe the skin dry with a soft cloth and put the surface with cold water in order to close the pores .sx Elbows that are rough and unsightly can be made softly rounded .sx Such elbows should be scrubbed at night with a brush and plenty of hot , soapy water , rinsed and carefully dried .sx Then apply plenty of good nourishing cream to the elbows and spread on two lamb's wool powder puffs .sx Place a puff over each elbow and fasten into place with adhesive tape .sx The tape should be long enough to encircle the arm .sx Remove the tape and cream with warm water .sx If the elbows are in bad condition wear these as much as possible for a few days .sx A week will show an improvement , a month will accomplish wonders .sx Beauty from the Garden .sx HOME-MADE creams are simplicity itself to make .sx Fresh lard of finest quality is the basis for most of the creams and the cooking should be done in earthenware .sx Numerous varieties can be made - cowslip , rosemary , elder-flower , rose , and carnation are pleasing .sx For centuries these flowers have had a reputation for their wonderful qualities .sx To make the creams , first prepare the flowers or petals and in the case of the elderflowers be very careful not to shake off any more pollen than can be helped .sx Cut off the white heels from the rose and carnation petals .sx In making rosemary cream the young pale green shoots can be used as well as the flowers .sx Cut off as much of the stalks as possible from all flowers , then melt the fact and put in as many of the flowers as the melted fat will cover .sx Half a pound of fat will cover several large handfuls of flowers .sx Then simmer the fat gently , either by the side of the fire , or in the oven for about fifteen minutes .sx By this time it will be thoroughly impregnated .sx Strain through a fine piece of clean muslin into a small jar and leave until cold .sx Then cover with paper and tie down firmly until required .sx House Leek Cream .sx House leek cream is a mot soothing cream for a sunburnt face or throat , taking out the sting and heat .sx Gather a fair amount of leek leaves , wipe them carefully with a clean , damp cloth , then pound them in a small mortar and beat the juice thus obtained until a smooth and rather thick liquid is obtained .sx Apply to the affected parts and leave on for about twenty minutes .sx Then wipe gently with soft linen .sx Lettuce cream is invaluable for the complexion .sx Pour a quart of boiling water over half a peck of full grown outside lettuce leaves .sx After about ten minutes draw off the water and chop the leaves finely .sx Put them into a soft , clean cloth and wring out all the juice that can be extracted from them into a porcelain or enamel pan and boil it for four minutes .sx There should be about four tablespoonfuls of green liquor , which should be placed aside until required later .sx Then take half an ounce each of white wax and spermaceti and four ounces of oil of almonds .sx Melt them together in a vessel placed in a saucepan of hot water .sx Stir the mixture occasionally and when quite smooth add the lettuce juice and mix thoroughly .sx Pour it into small porcelains jars and cover until required for use .sx Cucumber Lotion .sx A splendid lotion to soften and whiten the skin and preserve the face from wrinkles is made from cucumbers .sx Take six ripe cucumbers and without peeling , cut them into slices about half an inch thick .sx Steam until soft enough to pass through a colander .sx Then press again through a piece of butter muslin .sx Measure the pulp and for every three ounces allow half a pint of distilled rose-water , half a drachm of powdered borax , and twenty-five drops of simple tincture of benzoin .sx Dissolve the borax in the rosewater , add the benzoin drop by drop , shaking the bottle frequently , lastly add the rosewater to the pulp and shake again thoroughly .sx Apply the lotion every night and morning , after washing , to the face and neck .sx The result will be delightful .sx Toilet Vinegar .sx A delicious and aromatic toilet vinegar is made in this way .sx Dry a good quantity of rose leaves , lavender flower and jasmine flowers .sx Weight them and to every four ounces of rose leaves allow one ounce each of lavender and jasmine .sx Mix them well together , pour over them two pints of white vinegar and shake well .sx Then add half a pint of rosewater and shake again .sx Stand aside for ten days , then strain and bottle and label .sx It is curious how seldom the modern woman makes the " sweet waters " so beloved by her great grandmother , but they are well worth the little trouble involved .sx They are made simply by putting several handfuls of sweet-scented petals - rose-leaves , carnations , violets , jasmine or flowers which can be found in any garden , into a quart of cold water and bringing them slowly to the boil .sx They should be closely covered during the process and strained before using .sx The softer the water , the more fragrant will these sweet waters be .sx Penny-a-Week .sx Beauty Aids .sx GIRLS who require a simple depilatory for superfluous hairs may easily make up their own from one ounce of zinc oxide , one ounce barium sulphide and two ounces of finely powdered starch .sx After well mixing the ingredients , add sufficient water to form a paste of as much powder as will lie on a shilling .sx Apply it by smearing it lightly over the hair only with a soft rag , leave it on for a few minutes , then wash off the hairs .sx If the hairs are treated with the depilatory the last thing at night and cold cream is afterwards applied and left on overnight , any redness or slight soreness will be allayed by morning .sx A Blackhead Lotion .sx A safe , yet efficient and cheap blackhead lotion may also be made easily at home .sx Begin by taking rosewater , turpentine , benzoin and glycerine in equal parts .sx To each ounce of the liquid add two drops of lemon juice and bottle immediately .sx Bathe the affected parts three times a day , if possible .sx It is advisable to remain indoors for at least an hour after applying this lotion , as it quickly opens the pores .sx After submitting to this treatment for a week , squeeze the offenders out of the skin .sx If the skin is rather sensitive , so that it looks red after this application , it can soon be made white and smooth by applying fuller's earth , mixed to a thick paste with milk , before retiring at night .sx Next morning wash in cold water and apply a light dusting of rice powder .sx Banish Brow Wrinkles .sx One of the best home-made lotions for banishing brow wrinkles and " nose-to-mouth " lines , is that made by boiling three ounces pearl barley in rain water till the gluten is extracted and then straining the liquid through fine muslin .sx After bottling add , a drop at a time , twenty-five drops of simple tincture of benzoin , then shake well for three minutes .sx Store in a cool place .sx Apply this lotion daily to the face , rubbing along the line of the wrinkle ever so lightly .sx If persisted in , it will eradicate light lines completely , bring the deep lines more to the surface so that they can be treated , and prevent the formation of further wrinkles .sx To remove redness from the skin at this time of the year , a good whitening lotion is that made by adding the juice of a lemon to eight ounces elderflower water .sx Sponge the face well with this , leave it on overnight and wash off next morning in tepid water .sx If possible , substitute oatmeal instead of soap , especially for the morning ablution .sx You will be Dancing this Christmas !sx Here are a Few Hints to Help You Look Your Best .sx YOUR hands -
