Missing girl found in attic .sx HUNT FOR A GINGER-HAIRED MAN .sx ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Nancy O'Brien , the girl who was missing from her home for four days , was kept locked in an attic , it was revealed yesterday .sx As Nancy haltingly told the story of her four-day ordeal to police last night , another great search began .sx . this time for a ginger-haired man the police thought might be able to help in their enquiries .sx Nancy , who had been missing from her home at Burneside , Westmorland , since last Thursday , was found yesterday in the locked attic of a house in Chambres-road , Southport , Lancs .sx Hysterical .sx The windows of the attic were boarded over .sx Nancy was wild-eyed and hysterical .sx . and shoeless .sx But she was unharmed .sx Last night she was reunited at Southport police station with her aunt and uncle , Mr. and Mrs. Gibson , with whom she lives at Burneside .sx Last night , too , the police announced :sx " We want to interview Horatio Richard Seddon , 28 , who can possibly help us in our enquiries .sx " The police statement added :sx " We have alerted Interpol [the international police organisation] and all ports and airports in our effort to trace this man .sx " A police description of Seddon said he was about 5ft .sx 10in .sx to 6ft .sx , long-legged , very slim , ginger-haired and wearing tortoiseshell glasses .sx No Reply .sx He was believed to be driving an old-type black Standard 14 saloon number ZH2014 .sx This was how little Nancy was found yesterday at the house in Chambres-road .sx . At about 11 a.m. screams of " Help !sx " were heard by Mrs. Winifred Hoyles , 28 , who lives next door .sx She was playing with her three-year-old daughter , Julie , at the time .sx Mrs. Hoyles said later :sx " I went next door and shouted , but I got no reply and thought that perhaps I was hearing things .sx " I listened again , and it WAS someone screaming for help .sx . " The cries seemed to come from the attic windows .sx " I could see these windows were barricaded with boards , which seemed to be nailed across .sx " I rushed downstairs .sx . telling Julie we were just playing a game , so that she would not get upset .sx Ladder .sx " I went down into the street and stopped two men .sx They began to get a ladder to put up to the attic window , and I went to call for the police .sx " The police and the fire brigade arrived and they broke a window and got into the house .sx " I made a cup of cocoa and took it to the attic .sx . and there was this girl , wearing a green blazer and a dress .sx She was in her stockinged feet .sx " There were tins of food all over the floor , and there were women's magazines scattered around .sx There were also pieces of bread .sx There was no bed in the room- only a mattress .sx " Nancy said a man had left her in the attic on Thursday .sx She told me :sx " He took my shoes away and said it didn't matter how much I screamed because no one would come .sx Screaming .sx " He locked the door and I couldn't get out .sx I've been screaming all the time , and I've been eating out of tins .sx " Police thought last night that Nancy's screams had not been heard because of thick red-and-white-striped wallpaper which was plastered over the boards nailed against the attic windows .sx As far as Nancy was concerned , there might have been no window at all in the room .sx The only light was from an electric bulb .sx So , for four days , she did not know the difference between night and day .sx 12 MINUTES OF THE DUKE ON TV .sx THE Duke of Edinburgh made a twelve-minute appearance on BBC television last night- and looked more relaxed than his interviewer , Richard Dimbleby .sx It was the Duke's first interview on British TV and he came across like an unflurried man having a cosy fireside chat .sx This pre-recorded interview was for the weekly programme " Panorama .sx " It was concerned with the Commonwealth Technical Training Week which opened yesterday .sx The aim of the Week's campaign is to draw attention to the need for technical training .sx Twenty-eight Commonwealth countries are taking part and in this country 188 local councils have helped to arrange special events to boost the campaign .sx In his TV interview the Duke was obviously enthusiastic about the whole project .sx Difficult .sx And he had a lot to say about Britain's unskilled workers .sx There were not enough people in industry , he said , who were technically trained .sx He added :sx " By far the most difficult problem is this tremendous attraction of relatively highly paid jobs for unskilled people .sx " Anyone who went into unskilled work , he said , went in at the rate for the job , regardless of age .sx What many parents did not seem to realise was that a relatively high wage now might be a rather poor one in after years .sx Britain , said the Duke , could not hope to compete in foreign markets if industry went on using unskilled labour .sx The Duke pointed out that of 550,000 school leavers aged from fifteen to seventeen , who started work last year , only 130,000 took SKILLED jobs .sx Snapped Up .sx " There are all too many people who say :sx ~'Well , we're not going to bother to train anybody in our industry because they'll promptly get snapped up by another industry,' " the Duke added .sx During the training Week , factories all over the country will be holding " open days " to show their apprenticeship schemes to school leavers and their parents .sx A MAN WHO DOES FOUR JOBS .sx A BARRISTER told a court yesterday about the man with four jobs .sx This , Mr. Anthony McCowan told magistrates at Steyning , Sussex , is the working life of fifty-six-year-old Richard Gilroy :sx As a POULTRY with Lady Cunliffe-Owen .sx In a counter-petition Mr. Roberts asked the court to dissolve his marriage and give him custody of their two children .sx What Labour is +acking .sx .sx By JAMES BEECROFT .sx LABOUR'S cash problems were discussed last night by Mr. Len Williams , the Party's National Agent and Deputy General Secretary .sx The Party's National Executive , he said , was considering ways of increasing Labour's income .sx But whatever was done , the Party would never have funds on the Tory scale .sx Mr. Williams was talking to more than 300 Young Socialists attending their organisation's national rally at Skegness , Lincs .sx He stressed that last year +213,000 of the Labour Party's +250,000 income was contributed by the trades unions .sx The average contribution from individual Party members , he said , was only 4s .sx a year .sx " Even with the support of the unions , " he went on , " the amount of money we have today is not sufficient for our Party to do its job adequately .sx " Most of the Constituency Parties are always short of cash .sx Many of them are in debt for the last election .sx " The trades unions , said Mr. Williams , had not only been the main financial support of the Labour Party- they had been , through their steadiness , " the ballast which has kept the ship upright in heavy seas .sx " BLOW BY FATHER BLINDED HIS BABY .sx An 'inhuman man' gets six months .sx A FATHER struck his six-month-old son across the face so hard that the baby will be blind for life , a court was told yesterday .sx The father , Charles Wildridge , told the magistrates at Hull , Yorks :sx " I lost my temper when he would not take his feed .sx " Wildridge , 37 , of Rimswell-road , Hull , pleaded guilty to assaulting and neglecting the baby , Michael , in a way likely to cause unnecessary suffering .sx He was gaoled for six months .sx 'Severest' .sx The chairman of the magistrates , Mr. J. H. Tarbitten , told Wildridge :sx " You are a most inhuman man .sx " As a result of striking the baby , he is blind for life .sx Any father who does that deserves the severest punishment .sx " Mr. J. F. Croft , prosecuting , said that because of family circumstances , Michael was kept in hospital for a time after his birth .sx When taken home , he was normal and healthy .sx Two months later Wildridge- who has five other children- took the baby to a doctor's surgery and said :sx 'He has had a bash in the face .sx ' The doctor was out but his wife called an ambulance when she saw the child .sx She thought he was dying .sx Mr. Croft added that in hospital Michael was found to be blind in both eyes .sx Most of his face was bruised and X-rays showed that one leg had been broken but had healed .sx Temper .sx Wildridge , who is unemployed , told the magistrates :sx " I was preparing a meal for my sick wife and the children were coming home from school .sx " When the baby would not take his feed I lost my temper .sx I have not neglected or ill-treated the child , and it did fall off a settee .sx " Gardener accused .sx ANTHONY Reginald Hitchcock , 29 , was remanded in custody at Newport , Isle of Wight , yesterday , charged with the murder of John Clarence Neale , 35 , his partner in a jobbing gardening business run from their home , Parkside , Boulnor Park , near Yarmouth , Isle of Wight .sx Neale was found dead , with severe head injuries , in the garden of the house on Sunday .sx Hitchcock appeared in court handcuffed to a police officer .sx He covered his face with his free hand when the charge was read .sx The court was told that he had made a statement to the police .sx SHE FELL INTO HP 'SNARE' .sx A WIFE led a perfectly blameless life .sx . until she was " ensnared in the hire-purchase network , " a court was told yesterday .sx Said Mr. Patrick Mayhew at East Kent Quarter Sessions in Canterbury :sx " In this easy-come system , expensive goods came into her possession for small 'down' payments .sx " Then , added Mr. Mayhew , the wife " succumbed to temptation " and sold hire-purchase goods so as to keep up the payments on them He went on :sx " The pace got hotter , and the whole nightmare of deceit collapsed .sx " +1,000 .sx Mr. Mayhew was defending the wife , Mrs. Mollie Joyce Hawkins , 31 , of Hamilton-road , Dover , on charges of theft and fraud .sx More than +1,000 worth of goods- including washing machines , TV sets and typewriters- were involved .sx Mrs. Hawkins mother of four children , was gaoled for fifteen months MORE GO ON STRIKE .sx THERE were more strikes- and more people on strike- last year than in 1959 , but FEWER working days were lost , said the Ministry of Labour yesterday .sx There was a total of 2,849 strikes , compared with 2,105 in the previous year .sx The number of working days lost was 3,024,000 , compared with 5,270,000 in 1959 .sx There were more strikes in coal mining in 1960 than in any other industry- 1,666 stoppages , involving 171,000 men .sx The car industry had 129 stoppages- involving 122,000 men .sx Get cracking , Britain , says a union chief .sx LACK of leadership , second-rate men in top jobs , and a general complacency in Britain were slammed yesterday by Mr. Ray Gunter , MP .sx He was making his presidential speech at the annual conference of the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association at Folkestone , Kent .sx Britain , he said , could no longer afford to allow many leading positions in industry to be occupied by second-raters who were there only because of class and patronage Leadership .sx Mr. Gunter , who is Labour MP for Southwark , London , insisted that the nation's greatest need was dynamic , adventurous leadership .sx Politicians , trade unionists and businessmen should all " search their souls " and look ahead .sx
