KING ANDREW THE SAVIOUR .sx From Steve Edwards in Suva , Fiji .sx ROB ANDREW hauled England's Grand Slam heroes back from the brink of a disastrous Test defeat against Fiji in Suva yesterday .sx Man-of-the-match Andrew kicked two drop goals , scored his first England try and made another for Rory Underwood .sx The result rescued a tour that was floundering after just one win in four attempts .sx Now England have the confidence to face the daunting challenge of Australia in Sydney next Saturday .sx Andrew's first touchdown , in his 34th game for England , was a great moment for him .sx True , it was a 'dog's dinner' of a try with Andrew falling on the ball after two players from each side had missed an up-and-under on the Fiji line .sx But that didn't matter to Andrew .sx " Yes , it was special for me , although I haven't been too worried about scoring as long as the team's been winning , " he said .sx " I think that was our best win because Fiji have improved tremendously since we last faced them and they gave us all kinds of problems .sx " .sx Fiji had England on the rack for the first 20 minutes of the second half .sx The scores were tied 12-12 and Fiji fired four drop goal attempts wide .sx It took a brilliant solo break by Andrew to create a try for old schoolmate Underwood on the right wing to end the siege .sx Underwood extended his try record to 28 on the day he became England's most capped player of all time with 44 appearances .sx All the doubts raised by a poor run-up to the Test were erased by a team that finished with just nine of the Grand Slam side .sx Injuries and loss of form forced the selectors to break up the European champions , and their decisions were proved right .sx Full back Jon Webb kicked ten points in his first Test for two years .sx Martin Bayfield made an outstanding debut at lock alongside Nigel Redman , who only came into the game yesterday morning when Paul Ackford pulled out with an ankle injury .sx Captain Will Carling had no doubts that the 20 minutes after half-time was the toughest period of the tour so far .sx " If we had gone behind , it would have been the end of the game , " said Carling .sx England's other try scorer was prop Jeff Probyn , and that was set up by new-boy Bayfield .sx black-circle Jon Hall , the Bath flanker , flies home to England tomorrow for an exploratory operation on his right knee .sx England's struggling star will know his fate at lunchtime .sx DON'T ROAST LAMB !sx .sx That will only help Windies win the war .sx Says Robin Smith .sx By Steve Whiting .sx ENGLAND batting star Robin Smith last night pleaded with Ted Dexter and the Test selectors .sx .. don't axe Allan Lamb .sx The nuggety little Northants captain is having one of his worst patches in Test cricket with only 54 runs from five innings against the West Indies .sx People are already forgetting the two fighting hundreds he made in the Caribbean two winters ago and want him left out of next Thursday's fourth Cornhill Test at Edgbaston .sx But not Smith , whose early batting exploits in South Africa were often inspired by Lamb's example , and who still feels a buzz when he is at the other end .sx " Lambie was looking good when he made 29 in the second dig at Trent Bridge , " he says .sx " The West Indies would love to see us leave him out .sx They admire him tremendously and I know he gets on exceptionally well with all of them .sx .sx " They respect him for what he has done against them .sx He has played very well against them in difficult conditions and they know that .sx .sx He plays county cricket with Curtly Ambrose and that will give him a bit of extra edge , even though Ambie has got him out a couple of times in this series .sx .sx " Ambie might run in to him in a Test match and bowl him a brilliant ball that flies off the outside edge down to third man .sx " Allan will run past Ambie and say 'Why can't you bowl like that for Northants ?sx ' .sx " There'll be a little bit of fun between them , but Ambie will be charged up by Allan saying that , and Allan will be charged up by not wanting to get out to him .sx " He knows that next year he'll be taking a lot of stick in the Northants dressing room if Ambrose knocks him over too often .sx " .sx This week it was Smith , averaging 93.66 from 281 runs in the series so far , who gave England their biggest scare .sx He dropped out of Hampshire's game against Worcestershire at Portsmouth with a pain in the finger struck by an Ambrose beamer at Southampton three weeks ago .sx There was an even bigger scare when he went on to field on Wednesday as sub for his brother Chris , whose wife Julie was in hospital for the birth of their first child .sx .sx But Robin knew all was well when he pulled down a scorching catch at midwicket to remove Phil Newport .sx Straightaway he knew he was fit to play in the current game against Warwickshire and the fourth Test .sx " There was no way I was going to miss the Test , " he said .sx " I did all the right things - I had my finger X-rayed and I knew it wasn't broken , so I'm not taking a risk .sx " .sx England's other injury worry is opener Mike Atherton , who proved his fitness in Lancashire's Championship clash against Middlesex yesterday .sx That honour could be lined up for Glamorgan lefthander Hugh Morris , but his pair against the West Indians at Swansea last week could hardly have come at a worse time .sx .sx A sparkling 84 at Cheltenham yesterday means he might still be in when the team is announced at lunchtime today - if only on the basis that lightning can't strike three times in the same place !sx .sx If he isn't , watch out for Kent's Mark Benson or even , as an outside gamble , Surrey's Darren Bicknell .sx .. also lefthanders .sx Graeme Hick must have made his place safe with a brilliant 141 against Hampshire this week to follow his 88 in the Benson and Hedges Cup Final .sx But thank goodness England aren't the only team with problems .sx Clayton Lambert's 99 against Glamorgan at Swansea this week might clinch him the opener's place held shakily until now by Phil Simmons .sx And there is a strong rumour that the West Indies' 22-year-old lefthander Brian Lara only needs runs against Kent this weekend to clinch his first Test cap .sx And fast bowler Malcolm Marshall - who ended Lamb's innings at Trent Bridge - is having to rest after falling down the steps at the team's hotel .sx The doubts surrounding both Atherton and the weather might lead England to announce 13 players .sx My squad :sx Gooch , Morris , Atherton , Hick , Ramprakash , Smith , Lamb , Russell , Pringle , DeFreitas , Illingworth , Lawrence , Malcolm .sx .sx GRAF UP FOR CUP .sx By Hugh Jamieson .sx WIMBLEDON champion Steffi Graf is back in the mood to spearhead Germany's bid for Federation Cup glory in Nottingham this week .sx Graf , the girl who once ruled the world in awesome fashion , signalled her comeback by regaining her Wimbledon crown with a gutsy win over Argentinian star Gabriela Sabatini .sx While Yugoslavia's world number one , Monica Seles , delays a decision on playing after controversially withdrawing from Wimbledon at the last minute , 22-year-old Graf is radiating smiles again .sx Her career was torn apart last year with her father , Peter , involved in a sex scandal - but since he was cleared in a paternity case , Steffi has started to move in for the kill .sx .sx Dad Peter says :sx " She has now got over injuries involving her wrist , arm and shoulder .sx But , more importantly , she is happy again with her life - on and off the court .sx It's like she has been born again and we are now seeing the real Steffi .sx " .sx Seles has been playing in an exhibition in New Jersey but her aim to play in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics could be threatened if she doesn't appear at Nottingham .sx " Monica seems to be a little bit mixed up but we still expect her to honour her commitments and play Federation Cup , " says International Tennis Federation spokesman Ian Barnes .sx .sx Britain , beaten by the holders USA in last year's quarter-finals , take on New Zealand in the opening round with our hopes resting on Jo Durie , Monique Javer , Clare Wood and Samantha Smith .sx A record 56 teams are in the Cup and , after a qualifying round , the main competition begins tomorrow with 32 teams .sx Mike back on the Test trail .sx MIKE ATHERTON yesterday scored the runs that should keep him in the England team for the fourth Test at Edgbaston this week writes STEVE WHITING .sx Middlesex spinners John Emburey and Phil Tufnell , on a slow turner at Uxbridge , may not quite match up to the fury of the West Indies' mean machine .sx But Atherton's 91 in almost five hours , coming after a run of 49 in five Test innings as England's opener , showed he is over the stomach injury that kept him out against Notts earlier in the week .sx It was also enough for England manager Micky Stewart to say :sx " Now he is in the frame , like everyone else , including Ian Botham .sx " .sx What Atherton didn't need was his sad end , controversially given out leg before as he swept Tufnell .sx It was his highest first class score since 62 against Derbyshire in May .sx Lancashire went on to make 329 - a lead of 79 .sx Victim Botham did his hopes of an England recall little good , despite Stewart's assurances .sx 'Beefy' fell for only five to Derbyshire's Allan Warner as WORCESTERSHIRE were dismissed for only 218 and , following on 154 behind at Kidderminster , closed at 110-4 .sx Graeme Hick , desperately looking for another big innings boost , managed only 24 before falling victim to Derbyshire's teenage pace sensation Dominic Cork .sx Worse was to come for Hick when he was run out for three in the second innings .sx Botham's long-time England colleague David Gower will have to wait for a chance to overhaul Geoff Boycott's England run aggregate record .sx Gower didn't last long against WARWICKSHIRE tearaway Allan Donald , making only 18 before becoming the South African's 51st first class victim of the season .sx HAMPSHIRE lost Robin Smith for a duck as they struggled to 176 all out - a lead of 250 .sx Stuttered Darren Bicknell , Surrey's opener who could come into the England selector's reckoning , gave them a timely nudge with a fine 80 against YORKSHIRE at Guildford , passing 1,000 first class runs for the season on his home ground .sx After Surrey declared at 250-2 - 39 behind - Yorkshire were in trouble at 42-3 .sx WEST INDIES opener Phil Simmons guaranteed keeping his Test place after hitting a patient 77 against KENT at Canterbury .sx His place had been in danger following a total of only 86 runs in six innings in the series .sx Brian Lara , who might have grabbed Simmons' Test spot , made only 19 .sx But Gus Logie warmed up for Edgbaston with a whirlwind 70 off 76 balls as the tourists reached 310-7 .sx Platt's that - at pounds5 .sx 5m .sx DAVID PLATT finally joined Bari last night in a record-busting pounds5 .sx 5 million deal .sx Aston Villa's England star signed for the Italians after eight hours of talks .sx The pounds5 .sx 5m deal shatters the British transfer record set when England winger Chris Waddle went from Tottenham to Marseille for pounds4 .sx 25m. Platt , once given a free transfer by Manchester United and bought by Villa from Crewe for pounds200,000 , has signed a three-year contract worth about pounds4million .sx Move Bari beat off a late move by Marseille and Platt said :sx " I'm very excited about going to Italy .sx " It seems to have taken an age for the transfer to be completed , but I'm 100 per cent certain it's the right decision .sx " .sx Platt , with seven goals in his 21 England appearances , added :sx " I've spoken to Graham Taylor and he assures me joining Bari won't affect my England prospects .sx " Villa chairman Doug Ellis said :sx " Given the size of the transfer , it is only right I spell out the size of the fee .sx " We have added one extra clause - Villa will receive 50 per cent of the differential if David is sold on by Bari .sx " .sx
