90 INJURED IN TRAIN TUNNEL TERROR CRASH .sx PEOPLE REPORTERS .sx MORE than 90 passengers were injured yesterday in a horrifying pile-up between two trains in the middle of the Severn Tunnel .sx Dazed and terrified travellers had to wait in the darkness for two hours before rescuers reached them .sx Ten people were seriously hurt but no one died in the accident , which happened when the 8.30am Paddington to Cardiff InterCity 125 was rammed from behind by the 7am Portsmouth to Cardiff Sprinter .sx Emergency crews on both sides of the tunnel put a pre-arranged plan into operation and a resuce train with medics , police and fire - fighters was sent inside .sx But it was nearly two hours before the first casualties were brought out .sx Among them was the seriously injured driver of the Sprinter , Steve Carpenter , 36 , of Fratton , Portsmouth , who was trapped in the wreckage of his cab .sx A young doctor who was a passenger on the Sprinter was hailed as the hero of the crash .sx He gave the driver first aid and checked the condition of the other casualties while waiting for rescuers to arrive .sx He was then able to give ambulancemen his expert assessment of the cases needing the most urgent treatment .sx .sx One rescuer said :sx " He was brilliant .sx He told us the chap to worry about was the train driver and we spent about 90 minutes cutting him free .sx " The doctor must have been shocked but he put that to one side and did a professional job .sx " .sx Panic Adam Stirling , 27 , from Southville , Bristol , a passenger in the Sprinter , said :sx " There was a sudden loud crash and all the lights went out .sx There was panic for maybe 30 seconds but everyone was quite calm after that .sx " The four-mile-long Severn Tunnel opened in 1886 and is one of the longest operated by BR .sx High-speed lines were laid in 1970 .sx Last night BR revealed a major signal fault had existed in the tunnel for several hours before the crash .sx One of the drivers had themselves to bits at St Albans , Herts .sx Their bomb went off as they tried to plant it during a concert by the band of the Blues and Royals .sx An off-duty policeman foiled the latest planned attack when he challenged a man acting suspiciously in Wanstead , East London .sx .sx Police are understood to be working on the theory that the man , possibly a member of an IRA 'active service' unit
