BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS .sx The University stands on a site of about 94 acres ( 38 hectares ) , containing both buildings and playing fields , situated on the northern side of Kingston upon Hull , and easily accessible from the city centre .sx Building has followed a master plan prepared by the Consultant Architect , Sir Leslie Martin .sx Special facilities include The Middleton Hall ( which seats up to 500 for lectures , plays and concerts ) , the Brynmor Jones Library , the Gulbenkian Audio-Visual Centre and Drama Studio and the Health Centre .sx The University Union has its own accommodation in University House , which also includes the students' refectories and student services departments , such as the Accommodation , Careers and Counselling Offices .sx Staff facilities are available in Staff House .sx The Union runs a day nursery in a modern purpose-built building on the edge of the main site .sx The Halls of Residence , which are mixed-sex , are all within three miles of the University in the village of Cottingham and consist of The Lawns complex ( Downs , Grant , Lambert , Morgan , Nicholson and Reckitt ) and Cleminson , Ferens , Needler and Thwaite .sx The social hub of The Lawns is the Lawns Centre , which provides catering and other amenities .sx The other halls in Cottingham are organised on more traditional lines , and some include facilities for disabled students .sx The University has pursued a policy of purchasing private houses and converting them into student houses ; there are 1,515 places in student houses , most of which are conveniently near to the University and within easy reach of the city centre , apart from a small number in Cottingham .sx There are spacious gardens at the University and at the Halls of Residence .sx In the University grounds provision is made for rugby , football , hockey , cricket and tennis .sx The Boat Club has a boathouse by the River Hull .sx The modern Sports Centre containing two large gymnasia , a sports hall and a number of squash courts provides for all indoor sports , training activities and dance .sx A newly created Fitness Centre , containing saunas , jacuzzi , solaria and weights areas is due to open in the Autumn of 1991 .sx UNIVERSITY REGULATIONS .sx GENERAL REGULATIONS .sx Regulations for the maintenance of good order and discipline are promulgated from time to time .sx It is the duty of all students to take notice of the Regulations and to know and observe them .sx Students on admission must sign a declaration that they will observe the Ordinances of the University and will conform to all such regulations as may from time to time be made for the maintenance of order in the University .sx Students must also make themselves conversant with the academic regulations in the University Calendar .sx Regulations relating to Halls of Residence , Student Houses , Lodgings , Flats , Parking and Traffic , Freedom of Speech , Code of Discipline and the University Library , have the same force as University Regulations and any breach of them may be dealt with as a breach of University discipline .sx GENERAL CONDUCT .sx The University expects its students to conduct themselves at all times in an orderly manner creditable to the good name of the University .sx Intentional disruption of any of the University's activities or functions ( including the unauthorised occupation of University property ) is an offence which is subject to University discipline .sx The conduct of students in lecture rooms and laboratories is subject to the control and direction of heads of departments and their authorised agents and misconduct is an offence within the regulations relating to discipline .sx UNIVERSITY TERMS .sx 1 .sx The official dates of University terms as published in the Calendar apply to all students .sx Students must follow throughout the terms the courses for which they are registered and attend such classes and such examinations as are required by the University or by the Dean of the School concerned .sx No paid work may be undertaken by a student during term time without the permission of the Dean of the School , and such work must not conflict with the student's academic commitments .sx Students ( other than new students at the beginning of session and research students ) are required to arrive in Hull not later than the first day of term and , except with the special permission of the Dean of the School in which they are registered , may not go down until the last day .sx Other than at the beginning of the Spring and Summer terms the first and last days of term as published are regarded as travelling days on which no lectures or classes will be held .sx In the Spring and Summer terms , teaching will start on the first Monday of the term .sx The residence of research students is governed by the requirements of their Dean of School of Supervisor .sx Arrangements for new students at the beginning of session are notified to them annually .sx Absits and Exeats .sx ( a ) Permission to go down before the end of Term ( Exeat) :sx An exeat will be granted only in special circumstances .sx Students must apply to the Dean of the School in which they are registered , on an official exeat form obtainable from the receptionist in the Administration Building .sx At the end of the Summer Term final year students may go down after completing their final written examinations , without the formality of an exeat , provided they present themselves for such oral and other examinations as may be required .sx .sx ( N.B. Such students should inform themselves of the dates when their external examiners will be at the University , and before going down are required to leave particulars of the address at which they may be contacted , with the secretary of the School .sx ) .sx ( b ) Temporary Absence during Term ( Absit) :sx Leave of absence may be granted during University terms subject to departmental and other academic requirements .sx No formal permission is required for weeks-end leave which does not involve absence from lectures , classes , or other course commitments , but in all other cases application must be made to the appropriate Dean of School on an absit form obtainable from the receptionist in the Administration Building .sx Leave for three or more successive nights will be granted only if it includes a Saturday and Sunday , unless given on compassionate grounds .sx Students going on leave are required to inform either their Supervisor or the receptionist of the address at which they may be found .sx A student who lives in University or approved accommodation going on week-end or other leave is required to notify his or her Warden , Student House Tutor or landlady , of his or her intended absence and the address at which he or she may be contacted in case of need .sx REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT OF FEES .sx 2 .sx Students must register for classes and examinations and pay any fee prescribed and any other University dues on the dates and at the times laid down in Official Notices .sx CLASSES AND EXAMINATIONS .sx 3 .sx Students must follow throughout the terms the courses for which they are registered and attend such classes and such examinations as are required by the University or by the Dean of the School concerned .sx No student may change his or her course without the permission of the Deans of the relevant Schools and the Board of Undergraduate Studies .sx No student may enter for a University examination or an examination conducted by some other examining body without the consent of the Dean of his or her School .sx In the case of external examination such consent is normally given only if the examination is for a professional qualification closely related to the student's course .sx Consent for entry to examinations is normally given when a student completes registration at the beginning of session ; unregistered students will not be permitted to sit examinations without special permission of the Registrar and Secretary .sx Students must enter on their registration form particulars of any external examinations which they propose to take during the session .sx University examinations of any kind will in all cases take priority over any other examinations which a student wishes to take .sx Students absent from classes owing to illness must report their absence within the first two days to :sx ( a ) The appropriate Warden in the case of students residing in Halls of Residence .sx ( b ) The Accommodation Officer in the case of students in lodgings or private accommodation .sx ( c ) The Tutor-in-Charge or the Senior Resident in the case of students in Student Houses .sx ( d ) The Academic Office in the case of all other students .sx Where an approved course of study in preparation for the award of a degree requires attendance at practical classes or the submission of an adequate account of practical work or both , a candidate must have attended practical classes or have submitted the written work or both , to the satisfaction of the Dean of the School concerned , before being allowed to sit the written examination .sx Students who have been absent due to illness or given temporary leave of absence must report their return to the University in the same way as their absence .sx Wardens , the Accommodation Officer , Tutors-in-Charge and Senior Residents will report the absence and the return of a student to the Academic Office as soon as possible after the information is received from the student concerned .sx GOWNS 4 .sx All full-time students reading for a degree or diploma must wear approved academic dress on ceremonial occasions , at official interviews with University Officers and members of the academic staff .sx HEALTH 5 .sx Students , other than those living at home in the district , are required to bring their National Health Service Medical Cards to Hull and are advised to register with one of the University Medical Officers .sx ( Students should note that registering for a course at the University has nothing to do with registering with the Health Service , which is an entirely separate procedure .sx ) Students must inform the Registrar and Secretary , in the manner prescribed from time to time , of the name of the doctor in Hull or district with whom they have registered .sx All students are required to send information about their past and present health on an approved form before their arrival at the University .sx All students , prior to arrival at the University , are provided with a leaflet explaining the facilities available to them in the University Health Centre .sx Students will be called for early examination if the Medical Officer considers it advisable .sx All students not ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom for three years immediately prior to coming to the University are required to produce evidence of a satisfactory chest X-ray performed not more than three months prior to their arrival in Hull .sx Students unable to comply with this are required to attend the University Medical Officer within ten days of registration so that alternative local arrangements may be made .sx PARKING AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS .sx 6.1.0 General Members of the University staff and registered students may bring vehicles or cycles into the University grounds and park them there on the conditions specified in these Regulations .sx This permission may be withdrawn at any time and does not imply a guarantee that parking space will be available .sx 2.0 Liability Persons parking vehicles and cycles in the University grounds do so at their own risk and the University will not accept responsibility for any loss or damage to them howsoever caused .sx 3.0 Applicability The Traffic and Parking Regulations apply during both term time and vacations .sx 4.0 Registration Persons regularly parking vehicles of any sort within the University grounds must register such vehicles with the appropriate member of the Registrar and Secretary's Office within one week of the beginning of each session .sx Any newly acquired vehicles must be registered immediately .sx When a vehicle is registered a current parking label will be issued which must be displayed on the vehicle .sx 5.0 Traffic .sx 5.1 Those driving in the University must observe the traffic signs and notices .sx 5.2 Vehicles in the University grounds must be driven in a careful and considerate manner at all times .sx The speed limit for all traffic in the University grounds is 10 miles per hour .sx 5.3 The riding of cycles on footpaths and in pedestrian areas is forbidden at all times .sx 6.0 Parking .sx 6.1 Motor vehicles are not to be left overnight in the University grounds without the permission of the Registrar and Secretary .sx
